VW is making their own cells

VW is investing over a billion dollars immediately, retooling famous plants and doing their own cells within Germany.

Is this because they hope to become 100% electric (or nearly so) or am I thinking of another manufacturer?

They have mentioned that previously as a goal, I can't remember the timeline though.

Actually, the former executive in charge of the VW Environmental and Enginering division in the USA will be spending the next seven years in a cell.

That’s dedication!

Title should be VW preparing to make their own cells.

They have a ways to go before any actual cell production begins. They certainly are not making them right now.

Any car maker making a large commitment to electrics should have their source of electric power secured before doing anything else. This gives me some optimism that they are really going to do this and not just, "Talk the talk". Tesla has done this well, and GM somewhat in working with LG. The others? Are at the whim of the market, and make be doubtful...

I would put Nissan ahead of GM in your list. They still own a significant portion of their battery supplier, not to mention three factories on three continents.

I know it is a tired car trope, but I personally don't believe things that VW / Audi says will exist or happen until I see an actual vehicle using said on a local road.

I've got my hopes up over various VAG (... yes. Vag. I'm not going to make fun of this. Be strong, Sibilance) pr bits over the last couple of decades that didn't pan out.

Or cars that looked exciting and never made it to the US.

Am I interested in VW cranking out their own cells? Yes. Optimistic? Yes. Banking on it? Nope.

Weird number.

Happily driving The Gonk 70 (Shock Yellow 2019 Bolt)
