Using heat gun to fix interior scratches

Hi all,

Yesterday I experimented with a heat gun to "heal" some of the scratches that had occurred on my interior plastic panels. The results weren't bad at all except for I accidentally melted part of my carpet which stays handily hidden by my floor mats. Melted carpet also smells really, really bad :-&

The heat gun took the bright color out of the scratches and helped them blend in. For most scratches I really have to look to see them now whereas before they seemed blaring to me. I'm glad I did it, but you have to be super careful.

If anyone else is tempted to use this method to get rid of scratches, use the low setting on the heat gun, and experiment a bit on something that doesn't matter first. Go really, really slow. Don't get the heat gun anywhere near the carpet!

for even lower tech. I've used my fingernail to rub out some of the scratches. gets rid of the light colored raised areas.
