NY Times: Las Vegas and Back by EV

Interesting article from the NY Times, on the challenges of road-tripping in an EV. Pretty well balanced, and they got most things right.

Is there some privacy to be had with those 24,000 pubic charging stations?
Are they blue?

That article seems a little Tesla-friendly.

In the reddit thread about this, it was mentioned that they charged at Whiskey Pete's Hotel & Casino which is a Level-2-only location, which certainly didn't help their charging speed!

Also, who drives to Vegas and immediately turns around and comes back without a pause? In a realistic scenario, you'd be leaving Vegas fully charged. Driving 540 miles in a day in a Bolt isn't much fun, but driving 270 miles out and 270 miles back can be pretty easy if you're leaving fully charged each time.

Yeah, a 270 mile drive should be 3 hours driving, half an hour charging and another hour of driving... spend the night in LV and drive back to LA starting with a full charge...so for the 540 mile round trip, a total of 8 hours driving and one hour at DCFC's... why did they waste another 4 hours charging?

The author gave some incorrect information about the BMW i3. It charges at 50kW, like the Bolt. If the driver was only getting 10 miles per hour of charge at an EVgo station, then either she started at 90% SOC or something is wrong with the charger or the car.

Given the misleading nature of the article, I'd recommend that some of us contact the paper and complain. (Either pointing out misleading aspects that ought to be corrected, or as a rebuttal letter to the editor.)

Highest rates I've seen anyone achieve on Bolt is about 55 kW.

I sent the following to NYT:

Your article about EV driving from La to LV

to letters

It quite erroneous.

First no one leaves LA without being full. Second no one who I know drives to LA and LV and back without stopping. The point of going to LV is to stop and stay over.

Thus, number three, the person very casually starts back with a full electric tank.

I am on a Bolt EV forum where that trip is constantly discussed. Experienced drivers only make one stop between LA and LV, and it is less than 45 minutes.

While the article's hope for better infrastructure is positive, it is scare/terror tactics to combine a group of circumstances that NO EV owner would be caught doing.

Here is how it is done,:

I am a NYT subscriber and am quite let down by the sensational article that was published.

I've been here. I've been there. And I've been in-between.

Driving Electrics since 1973.
