  1. Level 2 chargers...the popular ones disappearing

    Charging and Batteries
Listen to neutrondrip: get a Real Electrician to do your EVSE install, and a Building Permit (which he should already know is necessary). If it's a hacked installation and your house burns down, your insurance company will NOT honor any claim. We're talking Serious Power here, folks: don't mess...
  2. 2017 Could I have a Lemon? Service Transmission Error

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
I had one occurrence of a 'Transmission Fault' error. I started it up, and the lights on the gear selector wouldn't light up, and the error message came up. After several attempts at rebooting didn't clear the error, I turned the Bolt off and waited about two minutes. When I restarted it, the...
  3. Tire pressure question(?)

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
I don't care about efficiency and traction is much more important to me. I run my tires at 35 psi. I took my Bolt into the dealer for the firmware update last week. He rotated the tires too, and bumped up the pressure to 38 psi. I immediately noticed the lack of traction.
  4. Flashing red light?

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV Issues And Problems
I never use the RKE fob to lock my 2017 Bolt: I just let it lock itself, or push the little button on a door handle. Should I be using the RKE fob to lock my Bolt?
  5. cost of driving with windows open?

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
The tradeoff between windows up or windows down (usually considered as a function of speed) varies with every model of car. One thing that the Bolt has going for it is the air conditioner is more efficient than an air conditioner on an ICE car. ICE cars use a compressor driven by a belt...
  6. Heater used when AC is running?

    Technical Discussion
For at least a few decades, the climate control system in many cars uses a combination of heating and cooling of the air being pumped through the cabin. By cooling the air, the dew point drops and some of the water in the air condenses, which is drained out of the vehicle. Then the air is heated...
  7. How to claim CA rebate on Bolt purchase

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
One of the nice things about the California Clean Air Rebate is where the money comes from. It does NOT come from taxes: it comes from 'cap and trade' money that the Big Oil Companies are forced to pay because of their heavily polluting refineries. So recipients of this money are getting it from...
  8. Watching the KWh/m drop at speed

Road Trip Report And Long Trip Discussions
Here in California, anyone driving at just 65 mph on any freeway is likely to be rear-ended. Of course, this is assuming that traffic isn't gridlocked. I pay little attention to the guess-o-meter or my mileage. It just doesn't mean anything to me. I plug in my Bolt at home three nights a week...
  9. Replacing a damaged Red CAV sticker

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
I have always received renewal notices from California DMV months in advance of the due date. They want my money as soon as they can get it. And I usually send it in months in advance. I'm just glad I don't need to get my Bolt smog checked. However, I do not appreciate the extra $100 annual fee...
  10. Replacing a damaged Red CAV sticker

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
California DMV is something else. We can only hope that the DMV in other states is better. Recently, it was revealed that the members of the California State Legislature have a private DMV office in the capitol building, so they don't have to sit in line at a regular (badly overcrowded and...
  11. Bbbbuuummpy-- Ride

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV Issues And Problems
The Bolt does not have the slushy ride of a big sedan. It's nimble and quick. You can't have it both ways. I love the taut ride. If you want a slushy ride, you should have bought a big Cadillac or Lincoln.

I always drive in 'L' mode. Yes, the regen paddle can be used in conjunction with the throttle pedal to provide a more gradual transition to more regen braking. The throttle pedal overrides the paddle when speeding up, but when the throttle is eased off, the added regen from the paddle will kick...

The parking brake makes a whirring motor sound when engaging, because that's what it is: a little electric motor that drives a leadscrew. There is a pawl in the gearbox that locks the drive gears: if you try to set the parking brake while the vehicle is rolling, this pawl will grind away at it's...
  14. EVSE lev 2 Chargers: reviews, opinions?

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
I bought and installed an Aerovironment EVSE-RS, because it was the one charger that was certified by Chevy. https://www.evsolutions.com/product-details/evse-rs/evse-rs These do cost more: about $600 on Amazon.com. I installed it in a NEMA 3R enclosure outside my garage, running the wiring...
  15. Did I irreparably harm my battery?

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
You answered my questions perfectly, Milo. You had plenty of charge in the drive battery when you parked it, and it only lost a bit of charge while parked. Your drive battery is clearly in fine shape. The 12V battery is likely in great shape too, as lead-acid batteries will tolerate much lower...

You are just getting started, so you are experiencing some of the teething pains that all new Bolt owners go through. The one-pedal driving takes some getting used to, but once you get through the learning phase, you will love it. Be sure to use the 'regen boost' paddle on the left side of the...
  17. Has This Ever Happened to Your Windshield?

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
Using a razor blade to attempt to remove it should be perfectly safe. Of course, it's best to use a holder for the blade, so you can hit it at a low angle. Also, using a little rubbing alcohol on a paper towel to remove the last of the residue is also quite safe.
  18. Interested in pros & cons from longtime owners

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
I bought my Bolt LT in December 2017, and have put 11,000 miles on it, mostly commuting. It's my first electric car. Charging at home is a real necessity: be prepared for this. I haven't done any Level 3 charging, but with home charging and a relatively short commute there isn't any practical...
  19. Did I irreparably harm my battery?

2017+ Chevy Bolt EV General Discussion Forum
Was your drive battery charged when you parked your Bolt outside? Was there any charge left when you returned? What is your GOM reporting now? In any case, it sounds like your Bolt survived the ordeal. If something awful had happened to the drive battery, your Bolt would likely have informed...
  20. Taper charging on AC?

    Charging and Batteries
Any battery being charged will slow its current draw as it approaches full capacity. The electrons just don't flow as freely into a battery as it approaches full charge. It's not a battery conditioning issue nor an AC vs. DC charging issue, it's just the nature of the beast.
