I keep seeing comments on the internet about onstar 4GLTE WiFi being available for $20 per month. The least expensive I could find was $25 on the onstar site. Have they raised the price? The only reason for wanting it is to use with android auto. Are there less expensive options?

Yes. Use the cellular data that comes with your phone plan. It will work fine w/ AA.

How use cellular data.

I've been involved with computers for a long time since our lab got an IBM 1620 in the early 60's but this is my first smart phone. A search of a phone manual and the internet did not explain how to do what you suggest. Also I have not been able to find a good manual for android auto. Would you please give me instructions on how to use the cellular data in place of wifi?

do you have a data plan with your cell phone? If yes, then you use that. All the Bolt does, is provide WiFi that then uses a cell phone type data plan. If your phone has a data plan, then getting one for the Bolt is redundant and just costs you more.

You can use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The phone needs to have mobile data in it's features either with a plan or with add-ons.

The On$tar data is convenient but the phone still connected to it as a wifi hotspot to get out to the internet. So having data on the phone makes that an unnecessary hop.
I hope you didn't get the Android Go version. I found it didn't work. Couldn't download the app from the Play Store. Returned the otherwise cheap otherwise usable phone and got a used better one.

I also thought maybe I could kill 2 birds and get Keypass working but that one still eludes me. So all I ended up getting with the better phone was AA.

Android

Android works fine as long as the phone works and wifi is available. (Home is in a phone dead zone). Recently parked outside a store that has wifi and had a great time checking out the android. Don't recall anything about a data plan. They did sell me data. Will have to take a trip back to Walmart tomorrow and see if they can help.

There is a mobile data section under Settings which is turned on.

I feel a bit like it was with my first computer kit learning machine code without a manual. Frustrating but fun.

Whoa. Do one or the other. A phone can consume a bunch of data which would draw down your data quantity in a hurry. There are settings to stop it from using mobile data for a lot of things. Unless you have a plan with ridiculous amounts or unlimited...then it wouldn't matter.

But yeah...download Android Auto if your phone supports it. Connect the phone to the car with the Bluetooth. Connect the USB cable to the car and the phone. Have the Android Auto slider set to on. Run Android Auto on the phone. You might need to select it from the infotainment screen. Then say ok google out loud.
All along there may little hiccups and fiddling but that's the gist.

Problem solved!

Took the phone back to the dealer and he determined that the phone system was indeed not working. He called Tracfone (deafness prevented me from doing the same) and and they found the cause in their system. A few minutes and it was corrected.

Another problem that I forgot to mention to him is how to turn down the sound volume. I found mute and unmute but no in between. Does anyone know how to do it?

What a great system android auto is! Can't wait for it to be possible to ask for navigation to the nearest CCS charging station.

Many thanks for all the help.

MY cellular account is with AT&T. It's been quite a while since I set this up. But somehow if found the cellular number associated with my Bolt. Then I contacted AT&T and added the Bolt's number to my account. AT&T charges me an additional $10/month for the data service plus fees and the monthly total is $13.99
