Hey Gang, just got done watching Teslabjorn's latest Ampera-e roadtrip video:

It's got me wondering about some of the features the Ampera-e has that we don't have here in the US/Canada. I was aware of the fact that some of the functions are moved to the center console( three blank buttons on the Bolt) for Pedestrian Warning, LKA, etc.

What I wasn't aware of is some of the following:

1) Speed Limit Detection- About 6mins into the video you see a close up the Ampera-e DIC. Just above the cruise control symbol is the Euro speed limit symbol.
Does this mean they/we have the ability to detect the road's current speed limit? Is this function on our cars but hidden and turned off? or is this a Bolt EV 2.0 feature coming in 2018?

2) Remote Headlight Leveling adjustment- About 36 minutes in it shows the adjustment on the dash next to the headlight switch an adjustment for the headlight leveling. Does this mean they expect the Ampera-e to be able to tow? Why else would you have such a feature?

3) Power Folding Mirrors- About a minute later he shows us the auto folding side mirror function on the car. - Not sure why we didn't get offered this feature here.

So what do you think, Bolt EV 2.0- 2018 features? or is some of this(Speed limit detection) in our cars now? I know we don't have the headlight/ power mirrors function, at least not yet.

Thoughts?

Opel gave Pope Francis a white 2017 Ampera-e. Search the web for more details.

If you like the Opel Ampera-e for its features, why don't you order one?

Thanks but I bought A top of the line Bolt EV Premier and enjoy it very much. Just trying to understand why the Ampera-E gets some of these additional features, yet the US based seem to lack them. Or is it because some of these are going to be added next year.

i believe a lot of these are driven by European regulations.

The Ampera-e also has a self parking feature - it will automatically parallel park for you as well as pull into a parking stall. That's definitely not on the North American versions. Conversely, the Ampera-e does not come with the 360 overhead camera feature. I'm guessing each will be offered in the next model upgrade in each of the markets.

My guess is the Bolt 2.0 will be a Buick, with a fancy interior, like the new eGolf. Since GM is still losing 9 or 10 $K on each Bolt, that may explain why they seem in no hurry to sell a lot. In the first 6 months they have sold about 6200 Bolts in the US. At 10 $k that works out to minus 62,000,000. But if they can make a fancy Buick maybe they can cut their losses. File this under total speculation.:nerd:

I do not think any of theses features will make it to the US, theses are Europe market features. For instance, all recent (last 10 years) cars in Europe, even the cheap ones, have some kind of speed limiter feature (because speeding is not tolerated on most of the continent), this is where the speed limit detection comes in; Same with the power folding mirror, this is basically a must have at any price point given the small parking spaces. Theses features are not view as important for the US market.

I tend to agree with TotaledJetta, GM will need to be bring the EV platform upmarket to pad their profits, as this is the strategy now: Profit not volume ("The goal is to sell fewer vehicles and make more money. It’s a new GM.”)

A screenshot from the Dutch (sorry for the language) spec sheet.

This is cool - I thought they were exactly the same. EVs in Europe are more popular I guess (read about startups that swap batteries in VW e-golf with 200 mile ones).

my previous car had self-leveling headlights. i could never figure out what they were really for, but every time i started the car, they would swing down, then up. i don't think they adjusted while driving, but i maybe just never noticed because they adjustments were minor.
