Anyone else want a Rivian?

Not sure if it is competition for the Bolt since it is a wildly different form factor, but I was really impressed by the R1S when I saw it at fully charged live in Austin Texas. It looked a lot better than the R1T and that sort of surprised me... I'm not normally an SUV guy, but with pickup trucks I like the look of a longer bed than the configuration the R1T has.

Anyway, battery sizes of 105 kWh, 135 kWh and 180 kWh with aprox 2.222 miles per kWh efficiency gives you ranges of 230+, 300+ and 400+ miles.

Using that same 2.2 miles per kWh and their statement that you can gain 200 miles of range in 30 min (90 kWh) on a CCS station, that gives you 180 KW charging (I would assume that charging quote is for the big battery pack, and the smaller ones will either charge slower or taper sooner, probably both).

I wish EV makers would just publish their charging curves!

I don't think I could live with the short range version of the Rivian, that quote of 200 miles of range in 30 min would be charging at 180 KW up to 86% SOC, I bet that it tapers well before then... the question becomes how fast does it taper? Also, that 2.2 miles per kWh is the average, I wonder how bad it is at highway speeds? If the average is 2.2 and we project the same efficiency drop for the R1S that you get in a Bolt going at highway speeds, are we looking at 150 miles range on the highway on an 80% charge (1.8 miles per kWh)? I would expect the R1S to have a worse hit to efficiency at highway speeds than the Bolt, so highway range on 80% charge of the small battery pack is probably closer to 125 miles than it is to 150 miles. If so, it isn't much better than a Bolt for cross country travel.

For me, getting the small battery Rivian would be about the most I could spend on a vehicle, so unless my assumptions are wrong above I can't see myself in a new Rivian... I would have to wait until they hit the used market in 5 or more years.

I would love for them to come out with a 250 HP or less version that was more efficient on the highway and cost less... In other words, I want a Short Rang RWD Cybertruck with a Rivian body :) I don't see that happening any time soon!

Later,

Keith

Never heard of them till now. I will pass even I have that sort of money. The efficiency is rather low.

A Rivian is certainly interesting and I will take a look at them.
Yeah, I wish manufacturers would publish charging curves. They probably don't because SOC and battery temp affect charge rate. I don't know how many Bolt owners I've seen complain about charging at 40kW or less at a 50+ kW station.
I've never understood American's love of trucks (including SUVs, built on truck underpinnings). Well, I understand it for people who NEED them : contractors, landscapers, large families, or in general people who fairly often have a need to haul lots of "stuff" around whether it be people or things. Or who drive out on dirt roads or on snow (although a Subaru auto-4-wheel might be a better choice). But I know so many single people, living alone, who have massive SUVs and pickups. WTF? I'm not saying it's wrong, just that I really don't understand the attraction.

When I need hauling capacity, I either borrow from a friend or rent. I have rented one pickup in the past 8 years, when I re-did a portion of my back yard and needed to haul a bunch of stuff. I think that vehicles should be taxed based on weight. A free pass up to 3500 lbs, and a sliding-scale multiplier on { (weight-3500) * M } after that. (It is the heavier vehicles, especially tractor-trailers, that do the most damage to our roadways.)

My intention is to see what comes out of Tesla's battery day and what is available in the 2022 timeframe, I'm basically looking for 400 mile range and 30 min charging time, preferably in a hatchback. Something like a better bolt

I like it. It is a bit pricey, but it would pull my boat and get rid of my last ICE vehicle. It is old and a real POS, vibrates, smokes and is on the way out anyway, so a new electric truck would be welcome. The cyber truck is also growing on me, if it really ends up selling for about $50k it would be a good deal........ I would also like the idea of a 4WD electric for the snow. New loaded ICE pickups are $50-80k now anyway.... Might as well have a compressor and electrical outlet for that price. Even at 2.2 mile / kwh, it is much cheaper than gas. (for me even with high cost electricity, it is only $0.07 - $0.08 / mile)
I'm also interested in the Cybertruck, Tesla has a long, proven history with over a million BEV's on the road vs. Rivan with what? um.. zero BEV's on the road.

At $49K the dual motor AWD Cybertruck (300+mi range) seems like a really good deal.
3mm thick stainless body... oh yes please! For reference the DeLorean had 0.8mm stainless skin, the Cybertruck skin is almost 4x thicker.

Those interested in the Cybertruck may find these interesting.
And May 17 episode of Jay Leno's garage will be featuring the Cybertruck.

I love how people who don't own the truck yet are planning their summer adventure for 2022. Also, the article mentions off roading where charging is not available and relying on the solar tonneau cover for power. I hope they plan to camp for weeks in a sunny area and use no power during that time while they re-charge!

I find more and more that the max charging rate matters far less than the tapering profile. A good example is the Audi E-tron which not only has a very good max charging rate but maintains that high rate well past the 50% SoC point. That 200 mile range is less than Bole EV specs, but the 20%-80% time to charge is far less!
And the American love-fest with pickups to drive their kids to the store?

I think when nobody bothered to engage your post further up the thread it was a hint that there was no interest in turning this discussion in to a toxic rant/argument.

Yup, when people ignore a post it is not an invitation to post again on the same vein trying to get a rise out of people... I thought about replying but realized with closed minded people there is no point engaging.

Ugliest front headlight design ever......

Not pretty, but their (prototype) interiors are nice.

I am not a fan of the headlights as configured... if they put the exact same headlights in on a horizontal orientation instead of vertical I would like it a lot better.

I warmed up to the Cybertruck. If I were one to spend more than $20k on a vehicle I'd consider it. The no paint appeals to me since I wouldn't have to worry about logging roads scratching it up. When we expand the family, 6 seats will be welcome.

Was it the Rivian that opens up the bed to the passenger cabin to increase the total cargo length? That seems like a it would come in handy.

Not sure about the Rivian but that was certainly a handy feature during the twelve years I owned an Avalanche.

The is the Bollinger with the front to back tunnel. The Rivian has the lockable storage tunnel side to side between the cabin and bed.
