In an odd discussion I had with my electrical company yesterday, I was told that a new Electrify America DCFC station opened up on April 1st near my house. Apparently it's been under construction since last November (from the pictures I've seen online at least), but I haven't heard anything about it until last night.

Anyway... I checked out their website since and I noticed you can submit proposals for locations. Has anyone done that? Support here in Michigan is painfully low. This new EA station (at a Sam's Club) isn't exactly "near" the highway nor near any shops I frequent (hence why I knew nothing about it I guess). It's also the only one located on the main East - West highway system across the state. EA says their goal is a station at least every 120 miles, and eventually every 70. Working on that idea I was going to start proposing out locations fanning out from this new install. Anyone else do the same in their area?

Yes. I suggested to them online and also via a phone call that they install one in my town in Northern CA. We have two major highways thru here and only two L2 chargers. To Tesla's credit they installed 10 Super Chargers next to the L2 J1772's. So Tesla was all over it. EA couldn't care less. I told the guy on the phone that he could be a "hero". He did help speed up the turn up of their Dunnigan site in Nor Cal which is what the call was actually about. So far it's one of the few EA sites that they've turned up. It will be nice if they can install a lot more sites to backup Chargepoint. It's just amazing how fast Tesla can bring up their sities by comparison though. EA is essentially a compliance organization IMHO. Their rate structures aren't very fair / good for the BoltEV but we don't have very many alternatives. Evidently EVGO is supposed to be putting in a DCFC in our town according to some Calif. Energy Commission (CEC) report. It's listed on plugshare in advance, but who knows how long this is actually going to take.

I will submit a request for a station near Corsicana, TX (I-45 between Houston and Dallas).
The distance between Houston and Dallas is about 240 miles.
EA has a new station in Huntsville, which is about 70 miles north of Houston. It is ideal for the Dallas-Houston drive (arrive with 25-30% charge remaining), but provides little help for the Houston-Dallas drive (arrive with about 70% of charge remaining).
Corsicana is about 115 miles north of Huntsville.

I go up to Mackinac Island every year. So far I can make it from WV to Ann Arbor in my Bolt, but I can't reasonably go north. Now I see EA has a Lansing location which will help, but something farther north is still needed: Clare, Grayling, Gaylord. And then in Mackinaw City at least a few L2 stations at the various ferry docks would enable charging while EV drivers are on the island. I'll send my comments along to EA too.

I go up to Mackinac Island every year. So far I can make it from WV to Ann Arbor in my Bolt, but I can't reasonably go north. Now I see EA has a Lansing location which will help, but something farther north is still needed: Clare, Grayling, Gaylord. And then in Mackinaw City at least a few L2 stations at the various ferry docks would enable charging while EV drivers are on the island. I'll send my comments along to EA too.
No progress with new stations here in WI at this point. But the culture here in WI just sucks for EV's.

I realize this is off topic (sorta). I must respectfully disagree. I'm in sales and i drive all over the lower half of the LP. Its very easy to "connect the dots" and get from A to B here.

As for the new EA facility on the west side of Lansing.......not "near" I-96.....are you kidding me? Its less than 400 yards from I-69/96! I may not darken WalMart's door but I go to Lowe's, MSUFCU is out there, Menards, restaurants, coffee houses, etc. There's plenty to do over there while waiting for your charge to be completed.

Also, there's a free CP facility on the west side of GR (Walker) about 250 yards off I-96 at a Meijer gas station. I've used it twice......its 50kW and FREE! Throw in the EA stations in Ypsi, Portage and the one that's going in down in Novi and I-96 and I-94 are pretty well covered. Chevy Dealers in Charlotte, Jackson, Okemos have DCFCs available 24/7. What more do you need to support the "main east-west corridors" in Michigan?

When we got an EV, we all knew charging could be a pain for a while.....its part of the deal. We're all taking one for the team. We know this is the future....we just have to be patient. In the 2.5 years (64k miles) I've been a Bolt guy, charge costs have come down, stations are being built and attitudes are changing. In a few years we'll look back and be reminded of "the bad old days".

Back to the topic....putting one in NW Indiana would be nice to connect us to Chicago....and how about a few to get us north for vacations (Mt Pleasant, Gaylord, Saginaw).

Hold your horses for just a minute... you're a bit off base.

The *new* station back in the end of March was in Portage, MI... I wasn't talking about the install in the Lansing, MI area. This thread was also started around Electrify America... not DCFC in general. At the time of the post we had 2 EA stations in the state... the one in Lansing and the new one that had just opened that week in Portage, MI.

Since then there is another EA station going in by Ypsilanti and one in Novi... but they are yet to be opened.

This meant there was exactly 1 EA station across I-94 in the state of Michigan. Living near the Kzoo area, I'd likely never use the EA station there, because I'd be full before my trip. I have to go to Ypsi before I hit another EA station once that opens... which from station to station is 108 miles, so very very doable even in the winter from a full charge. Realistically you should consider from an 80% SOC from a DCFC system since tapering is so severe at that point... and then based on the mileage I saw for my I-94 commute in the winter (I bought the car in February) you won't make it between these two stations. My plans are also to end in Ann Arbor and return... so the next station is beyond my end point, but if reachable a doable extension.

Looking on Plugshare there are many more "DCFC" stations. There's some context that needs to be known about that though. The unit in Ann Arbor was broken for many, many months and has only recently (the last few weeks) come back online. The unit in Jackson, at one point, was listed as business hours only. I see it's now shown on Plugshare as 24/7 (great news)... it is only a 25kW charger, so hard to really consider a fast charge... but it's free and fills in a nice gap. The Jaguar dealership in Kzoo had their 25kW unit down for many, many months as well. They are *NOT* interested in supporting the general community though... they had the unit free when it came back up in April, available 24/7. Then they moved it to business hours only, but still free. Now they are charging and back to 24/7. You're far better off going across US 131 to the University L2 chargers for free, or driving to Portage and going to the EA stations... it's cheaper and quicker.

Since my original post yes the 50kW free charger at the Meijer station opened up. I haven't been back up there, and wish I had known about it last time I was as it had opened the day before. It seems to be the best DCFC units in the state... 2 50kW for free, right off the highway near a major interchange. Kudos on the power and location for that unit... it was done *after* this original post, and not an EA unit.

Back to the placement for the EA unit in Portage. It is located on a major surface road, but it's not easy to see from the road at all, and you either need to know it's there or be guided by GPS to find it. It is often blocked by employees from the steakhouse restaurant "behind" the station as well, or at least surrounded by those on break from the restaurant out there smoking it seems.

To your point... just since my post at the start of April, things have drastically improved with new stations or under construction stations. I'm surprised EA or someone hasn't taken advantage of the nuclear power in SW Michigan as Tesla did with their Supercharger station on I-94 near Stevensville. With an EA unit in South Bend, IN I fear they don't see a need for further west expansion on I-94, but I can't make it from Kzoo to Chicago, as there are no DCFC stations across Northern Indiana. Something in the Michigan City area by the Outlet mall and/or Casino would be a great spot IMO to fill in that gap. Your other choices are either in Chesterton near the fast food places, but I don't see a lot large enough, or you're to Portage, IN on the northside by the Steak and Lube / Cabellas / McDonalds. There is plenty of space there, and easy access for both I-94 and the toll road at the next exit in Ripley.

I'm going to start testing the I-94 route as I head to Michigan football games in the Fall. I've got ~230 miles roundtrip, with only the Jackson dealership and the Ann Arbor end point having DCFC stations that would be useable (since I'm starting full, I can't use the stations in Kzoo). With an influx of folks in Ann Arbor for the game, it's not likely to have stations as free as "normal" days... so I've got one 25kW charger in Jackson to use... or find a L2 during the game that allows you to stay connected the entire time you are there. Tailgate to after the game can be a long time, especially for night games. Even the 3:00 games are 10-12 hours of the car parked, and I'm likely to be full and blocking a charger for many hours.

Without a doubt things are improving, and I'm happy to see that.

Yes, I submitted a request several months ago but no reply (yet). I requested a site between Atlanta and Mobile, AL along the I-85/I-65 route. I was able to dig deep and find something on EA's site that said they had two planned for this route during phase II, but that info is hard to come by.

Hey, if you're willing to contact EA and request a site between Cumberland and McHenry, MD, I'm willing to request a site between Atlanta and Mobile! Maybe we can turn this thread into a "let's all request another poster's ideal site location" effort. :p

The site in Alabama should be at the Walmart in Greenville, AL at exit 130 on I-65. It's easy to know that's the right spot because there's already a Tesla Supercharger site at the exit.

But the connection to stations along I-10 is a bit tricky. Currently there is an EA site in Pensacola, FL and Gulfport, MS (currently down as of 2 days ago). They are 132 miles apart. Gulfport to Mobile is 130 miles while Mobile to Gulfport is 75 more. So there's 205 miles between the proposed station in Greenville. OTOH Greenville south to Pensacola is 122 miles, while Pensacola to Gulfport is 132 miles. So while it's 50 miles further in distance, the distribution from Greenville to Pensacola to Gulfport is better than the too far distance of Greenville to Gulfport via Mobile, or by putting an additional station in Mobile 75 miles from Gulfport and 55 miles or so from Pensacola.

I can see New Orleans to Atlanta with stations in Greenville and Mobile coupled with the DCFC at the Alabama/Georgia border at the welcome station. It's 145 from NOLA to Mobile, 130 from Mobile to Greenville, and 120 from Greenville to the AL/GA border with a final 80 miles into Atlanta.

I submitted several to both EA and EVgo (they had a consultation period around the same time) early last year but I don't recall the locations now... I would think one was Syracuse, NY where the various Interstate routes meet, but nothing is planned there as yet (by Electrify America or, indeed, any other entity capable of installing fast chargers).

By my count, they have another 75 or so Cycle 1 locations to announce, which have already been chosen, then we'll be into Cycle 2 announcements. Hopefully that will be when we see submissions from the past year or so start to appear.

Unfortunately I think your best bet there is going to be from the rebate structure that Consumer Energy is offering in the state of Michigan. Unfortunately the State of Michigan shut down their idea in the past, because the funding came from a rate hike. The State said since all customers would pay the hike, and not all customers have an EV, that it wasn't fair. I can understand that... I'd like subsidizing my EV use, but understand the issue around it. Unfortunately the way the state has utilities locked down, by law a 2nd party can not resell electricity and thus Consumer didn't want to do the capitalization and hope for a return.

Now Consumers is offering rebates to those who are undertaking public use chargers (L2 and DCFC). Get one of the Ferry companies to put one in at the docks and EA to use both the West Branch Walmart (near the outlet mall) and the Gaylord Walmart and you've got coverage. You should be able to reach West Branch from Ann Arbor, and if not there is a dealership (Al Sera) in Flint with DCFC. Otherwise you can come up towards Lansing, and Gaylord should be in reach... but boy would be nice to have something *just in case* along US-127.

Thanks rlhammon. I've written to EA and a couple government agencies that have to do with tourism in Michigan. Gaylord is only L2 at a motel as of now. I'd love to see a mid-state DCFC so I could make it from the Detroit area to Mackinac in one day. Here's hoping one will appear someday.

Late to this thread... I suggested they put one between Emporia VA and Florence SC and looks like they have... at Rocky Mount NC. I don’t know if they just missed spec’ing that section of I-95, or if it was just omitted from their original map on the app.... but voila there it is.

I submitted two locations, one on the way to Yosemite on California Highway 120/108 junction before the climb up the mountain. 2nd one on California Highway 108 and Sousbyville Road which is a good location for people visiting the Sierra Nevada mountains or Stanislas National Forrest. This it at 3,000 ft on the way up Sonora Pass. I don't know what the process is but I figured it would help with tourism in my location.

I have been driving electric since 2012 and I absolutely hate to buy gasoline anymore. I think others feel the same, so the more EV charging locations the better.

Awesome! This is very important indeed! I noticed they're starting to add sites also on the East Side at Bridgeport and Bishop and one other site further south of Bishop. Yep. Looks like Oakdale / Groveland have or are getting sites. It would be nice to have a DCFC in the Valley too and one over at the Mobil station in Lee Vining.

I've looked at doing this trip a couple of times since I have family near Kalamazoo. I even thought about stopping for a hike in Indiana Dunes National Park so I could add 20-40 miles via level 2 charging. Right now if I did the trip in my Bolt, I'd go out of my way into South Bend, IN and use the fast charge there before taking 131 into Michigan. And, then, you can't rely on this South Bend charger as users say 3 of the 4 chargers are not working.

I've submitted to EA the Exit 19 (I-94) Portage, IN (Bass Pro Shop exit) location. It splits distances between Chicago and the two points east (South Bend / Kalamazoo), and is close (2 exits) from the I-65 (North / South) interchange. There are fast food and sit down restaurants, and well as shopping all within walking distance of a few minutes. Not sure they'll come to an agreement with anyone in that location... but here's to hoping.

There's nothing of a DCFC infrastructure in NW Indiana... so they don't have anything to fear from competition. The L2 chargers in the area either are reported to not work, or in some cases are very expensive (see the outlet mall in Michigan City)... so I think a viable working solution here solves many problems.
