App Killing iPhone Battery

2914 Views 44 Replies 22 Participants Last post by  gbeddow
Did a quick search and didn’t see a solution that could find.

Drove home today with my phone @ 80% starting. In 30 minutes, my phone dropped to 55% and was warm to the touch. Battery in settings said it was all from the Chevy app. I have the app background refresh disabled. IOS is latest version, along with the app.

Anyone figure out a solution to this problem? In the meantime, I’ve deleted the app.

I'm guessing you are talking about the CarPlay app. My phone connects to it every time I drive the car but I have not noticed much drain on the battery. But when I connect to the OBD reader, the battery will go down quickly and the phone gets warm.

Is the app the MyChevrolet app?

I use it all the time on my iPhone12, never have an issue with it running down the battery.

Try uninstalling and reinstalling the app to see if that helps.

Also, go to settings / battery and scroll down, it will show recent battery usage by app, which may identify the culprit.

Carplay isn’t an app, it’s a feature built into the iPhone software.

You are correct, the MyChevy app. I tried the reinstall method previously when I noticed this happening at other times.

Check the settings / battery and see if MyChevrolet is using a lot of battery capacity.

It shows up on my infotainment center as an app. Only selectable if the phone is near the car.

I understand what you’re saying, but there’s no CarPlay app on an iPhone. The OP was having an issue with MyChevrolet app, not Carplay.

I see, thanks.

Apps can hang, even on iOS (iPhones). Next time, you could try force closing the app:

If you go to Battery, can you show a screenshot to prove it was the app and not something else? 9/10 times it tends to be another aspect or app, but you think it's the app when it's not.
I was curious, so had to take a look at my iPhone's battery usage. This is the 10-day usage chart, and I am surprised at how much the MyChevrolet app is utilizing. I don't have any problems with battery drain, but still worth noting.

I had a stretch of a couple days where I thought I needed to replace the phone it was draining so fast. Turns out it was the MyChevrolet app. I think I uninstalled and reinstalled and it is OK.

I think the impetus was when I opened the app from the car dashboard in CarPlay on a road trip and it began feeding live battery status and such to the app on the dashboard. It was nice info to have but not at the expense of the phone.
I think there is a bug in IOS that lets this happen. I have a game I play "while waiting to do something else" and It will run the battery down, sometimes. Background updates for it are off, but some how it still manages to chew battery every now and then when not being used. I tend to just kill apps like this when I'm not using them. App loading is battery expensive, but nothing like having an app misbehaving.

Interesting about the interaction with CarPlay. CarPlay has been very buggy forever and seems to get scant attention from Apple these days. So it's easy to imagine CP kicking off a problem.

I'm a bit of an Apple fanboy (Macs, iPhones, Home Pods etc, but I'll also be the first to complain about piles of bugs they never fix.
I had the same issue, during the last few weeks this app had been draining the battery in my iPhone 14 Pro. (Got my EUV just last month). Looks like the myChevrolet app has a lot of things to do with CarPlay. After reinstalling it, the app does not drain that much as before. But recently I rely LESS on Apple Maps on CarPlay infotainment screen, only Apple Music is on, not sure if that's also a cause.

Check to make sure background refresh is turned off.

i think MyChevy can be configured to track you driving habits, which means it will be running all of the time in the background.
Sounds like it may be a CarPlay issue. I may reinstall the app, but turn off Bluetooth on the phone when in the car to see if I get the same results. Thanks all.

I had the same problem when phone was connected to Bolt USB. Doesn’t seem to be doing it anymore.

I recently noticed my phone being very warm just sitting on my passenger seat when I got home.
