Long story made short....

My daughter's 330i broke down in our driveway and had to go to the shop yesterday for repair.
But, she still needed a car to go to school yesterday- 86mi round trip from our house. Our other daughter is is out of the country on vacation and her 325ix was available in the driveway. I told my wife... "just have her use the 325 for school since it's been sitting- it will be good to run it anyway". Here's my wife's reply "really!... why don't you let her use your car (2017 Bolt) for school and you take the 325 to work (50mi round trip)?... I don't want her having any car trouble at night!... and you never have any problems with your car!". Well, I really couldn't argue with her logic, so I let the kid take my car Tuesday.

We got the 330i back from the shop last night (blown ign coil on cyl# 5), so I text my daughter that we got her car back and she can go back to using it for school Wed. I included my wife on the text. When my wife saw the text I got "....are you kidding me? you're gonna let your daughter drive 43 mi home at 10PM in a car that just came home from the shop! You take the 330i to work tomorrow to make sure it's ok, she'll use your car again!". I did as "requested".......

Now is that an endorsement for the Bolt or what? :D

Nice thing is.. .she set up a EvGo account (on her own while in the school parking lot) and has been charging the Bolt for free at the college when she uses it every Sat for class.
I let her take it every Sat to save her gas $$.

She'll be there for 4+ hrs today... I'll get it back with a full charge -40 mi.

^ Well, last night she got home from school (Masters class) at about 10:40PM.
I quote "your car is fun to drive!". High praise indeed coming from a 3+ yr BMW driver!

She hugged me and I noticed her hands were ice cold... she told me she was trying to reach 4+ mi/kWh on the display so she didn't use heat for the 43mi trip home at 22 F outside. She forgot about the steering wheel and seat heat.
I commented that it shouldn't be hard to hit 4 mi/kWh with no heat, so then we talked about speed... she was driving 75-80mph!! She's used to the BMW it seems in that respect!

She drove 176mi over the two days she used the Bolt.. she ended up at 3.9 mi/kWh. I told her since she charges for free at school... don't spare the heat, but she's into gaming the system and is looking to beat my mi/kWh numbers now- even if it means being cold. I explained the significance of the color changing ring around the speedo, and told her she can easily beat my numbers if she keeps it under 65mph. This weekend the winter tires go on... lets see if she notices the mileage hit when she takes it school Sat.

Re the two BMW's... my bro in-law owns a body shop and specializes in BMW's. He gets lots of auction crash cars, he restores them and sells them with salvage titles. He's really good at it and has 3rd generation customers at this point. Both of my kids BMW's were low mileage crash BMW's that he restored. One was his daughters daily driver till she had a kid and needed a bigger car (7-series) and the other (the 330i) only had 27k mi on it when we got it from him... it's like a new car. We (my wife an I) felt that BMW's were/are very solid/safe cars for young drivers so we got them both used BMW's when they were in high school and they've served them well so far. Of course the "family discount" helped... and we pretty much have to force him to take money when he does repairs on either of them.

I have mentioned to my daughter who's been using the Bolt on Saturdays and the last couple of days- that once she gets her masters (next year) and starts working (and pays off her $40K student loan) that she should look into getting a M3 or similar EV. She was receptive to the idea and loves the very low maintenance/high reliability aspect of EV's vs. her high $$ maintenance BMW gasser. I do believe she will end up with an EV one way or another, partly due to driving the Bolt every Sat for the last half year and now using in in relief duty for her DD.

Drive the M3 and all those bimmers will get kicked to the curb...
Yeah, exactly Dave! That's my hope for her...

For the last two semesters of her Masters program (next year) she will be interning at a local hospital- many have free EV charging.
I'm pitching the "FREE CHARGING" aspect as much as I can :D
And, with her chosen profession... she will most likely end up working in a hospital for quite a few years. What's better then free charging at work?

Of course... with her car not my Bolt!!!

Man, that sucks. Bolt EV down! Bolt EV down!

Time to get another one because you'll never see yours again.

Ummmmm... no!

On a "as needed" basis, no problem.... as a daily driver... not happening!

I already told both girls if they end up with a long work commute- by a used Volt or Prius till you can afford an EV.

Just trade in her BMW for a new Chevy Bolt EV and end that story "happy ever after"!:)
^ yeah, for her... not for me paying for it! :crying:

We paid for her first 4 years college education- which she finished in 2.5yrs... we gave her the leftover 1.5 yrs $$ towards her Masters.
We paid for her car.
We still pay for her car insurance.
We pay her medical insurance.
She lives at home for free.
She has a part time job as a pharmacy tech at $15/hr... she banks 100% of that $$.

I'm not buying her a new car... even the boss agrees on that! She's 21 and can start building her own credit and making her own purchases.
