Carbon fiber wheels

There are rumors that GM will offer production carbon fiber wheels soon. The unsprung weight reduction on a Bolt would probably result in a real improvement of range.

As nice as those wheels are I hate the idea of the cost to replace even one of them. My guess is a set alone will be easily $5000. The cost replace just one of them will discourage me from getting them. Still cool to see them photoshopped.

 

The Carbon fiber wheels from GM would be ideal I think. Easily weighing in around 10-12 pounds I would say ? Whereas your regular oem wheel could range from like 18 - 26 pounds easily. Definitely effective to reduce rotational mass !

But since we're on the topic of wheels, any chance you can fit this nice HRE wheel on the Bolt? They're the ring brothers wheel.

It looks like that wheel is only available in sizing beginning at 19", which will never fit a Bolt, while the other wheels I posted are available in smaller diameters suitable for the Bolt.

 

Is the Bolt EV sitting on 18" wheels? I know there's plenty aftermarket wheels that fits all sizes.

 

I doubt it would even come with 18s... My guess would be 16s ?

One big problem with this thread is how many people do you really think will put aftermarket wheels on the Bolt? The way I see it, most Bolts will be rolling on stock wheels. But it's Tesla rival will be more likely to get the customization crowd.

Indeed - I'll just be happy to get one - stock wheels and all.

 

I definitely agree as well, but there is still a group of people that would definitely like to consider it. Me personally, I like being different. If I can reduce rotational mass at the same time, I'm all in

 

I won't be getting a set of performance wheels but I will buy a separate winter set that's meant to take a salty beating, most likely a set of these plain steel rims.

 

Those are definitely the go-to for winter wheels

 

You could even just use the stock wheels and tires. Since they will be all season tires you could save yourself some money for the first couple years. but after that you'll want to get a winter wheel and tire set.

 

I wonder how much the optional steelies would be from the dealer though

Look hard enough and you'll find a ton of deals, people want these off their hands more than you want to use them.

 

With winter coming, but you probably won't get one until next spring and by then you won't need steelies and have plenty of time to look for a set. I think a generic steel wheel should fit the bolt as long as it's 6.5 X 17 inches.

 

One thing to think about is that if you change to an aftermarket wheel, if you also change to a non-oem tire that has a higher rolling resistance, you are most likely going to offset any improvement in range seen (if not even further negatively impact range).

 

How much of a difference would it make potentially to your range ?

 

really hard to give an accurate number of how much range the Bolt will lose with a higher rolling resistance thank to winter tires. the Tesla S could lose up to 40% but that's taking into account winter tires, turning up the heat and other factors to do with cold driving.

 

40% is quite a significant number, I really didn't think it would be that high but it does make sense. Snow on the road would create a lot more resistance alone, temperature, heat like you said, etc. Never really thought of it in how much of a toll all of these factors would take off of it

 

I have an I-miev that I put snow tires on for six months a year. The range is not impacted in a measurable way, but the tires do improve ride quality due to the softer compound. However the tread pattern is not aggressive. Overall cold weather temps do reduce range by a third or more.

 

It's a trade off, have to decide what you really want and if it's winter tires you almost have no choice, and if you want aftermarket wheels it doesn't have to be that bad since it all comes down to what size you get, some people want a set a bit more aggressive than OEM and others will want to go big with low profile tires.

 

On the bright side, you'd probably want to huddle up inside the house and not leave it when the cold weather sets in, so a lowered range shouldn't affect you too much.

Now if only manufacturers can find a way to put low(er) rolling resistance tech into some Z rated rubber!

 

On my '16 Volt, I put Michelin X-Ice on the factory alloys for winter & bought a set of nice custom aftermarket rims for the OEM Michelins for summer use. My question is whether the Volt rims are the same as the Bolt so I can put them on the Bolt.
