How was the consumer harmed?

I was part of an Ebay class action lawsuit that paid out... 1 cent. I have the check on my fridge.

I'm surprised there isn't a law that says if the paper check costs more than the payout, then a company doesn't have to send it.

Count me out too.

GM could have an opt-out license if they wanted to. And if you opted out, then no OTA Updates, no remote connectivity and other restrictions.

Just like software companies, it could basically be, agree or you can't use it.

yes it does
no one is collecting data on my Bolt

lawyer on bubba
I think you missed my point. The Bolt is just another car. All the data collection is done through onstar's cellular connectivity. Therefore Onstar needs to be policed for privacy violations.

You can not claim uncompensated data collection on the Bolt while excluding any other car that has OnStar.

"A proposed class action lawsuit against General Motors alleges that vehicle owners should be compensated for data that the OEM collects from connected vehicles"...
Given the vast majority of consumers (myself included) who routinely sign away the data collection rights by clicking "agree" to license agreements without a second thought, the value of the "compensation" is probably going to be zero.

You must not be aware that almost every car as a "black box" which does much of this and more. It's used for accident investigations and to improve the vehicle safety from real world accidents. It's a rolling collection, such that only the most recent information is there... not an aggregate from start of ownership... but it's being collected, stored, and is made available to others (not the owner).

i'm well aware of that. but a black box isn't anything like onstar recording everything, and a black box is not phoning home. as far as i know, the only gps in my car is onstar, so when i disable it, no one is tracking my location.

A fair amount of the data collected is necessary to ensure the reliable operation of the OnStar service and the safe operation of the vehicles in question. Not sure if there is an actual injury here, especially since we all probably agreed to the collection of this data when we signed up for the OnStar service.

What? Nobody realized when they got those OnStar monthly updates on your Bolt's "health" that GM was keeping track of "things", you know peeking under the hood. It does say you can opt out. I wonder if there is a hidden camera in the mirror keeping an eye on my teenage daughter? Wait a minute... I don't HAVE a teenage daughter!

If your opinion about this issue is similar to mine, feel free to go to

and tell them what you think. I told them
Regarding https://www.fenderbender.com/articles/12611-lawsuit-raises-questions-regarding-vehicle-data; if this goes forward, I would like to file a statement/deposition/whatever in support of GM/Chevrolet against this golddigger.

Would I mind if *you* record it? Of course, unless you can demonstrate a legitimate value to be gained from having that info. Like GM/Chevy can, because they have huge amounts of the data, and are way more likely than you to notice trends or issues that might result in beneficial changes to this or future vehicles.

Do I mind if GM/Chevy collects that info? Nope.
