At least Chevy is making an effort to meet some of the demand. But it's still a far cry from meeting it.
Increased production is always good. Should be some better deals to be had on Bolts later in the year.
And without reading the trashy electrek blog spot, I already know that there is some slam about Bolt production not coming close to current Model 3 production. A Fred Lambert special.

What is not clear to me is whether the production increase in Q4 will be for the 2018, or the 2019 version. I was told yesterday at the local dealer here that I can no longer order a 2018 Bolt. Orders for 2018 Bolt production in Canada have been completed with all deliveries expected to be made by the end of September. Based on what I see here, GM would likely have to go beyond a 20% increase to meet demand.

Q4 2018 production will almost certainly be the 2019 models. That's typical for most makes and models across the industry: new model years are usually released at the start of October, and vehicles shipped in October and beyond are typically the new model year.

There may be factors other than final assembly line capacity that appear to limit the number of Bolts built. Availability of components may be a bottleneck (esp. the motor/drivetrain and battery packs, which come from LG in South Korea). GM may be intentionally limiting production: they may be losing money on the Bolt, or they may be trying to avoid getting to 200,000 electric vehicles.

And it's not easy to figure out just how many Bolts are being made. Domestic sales and international sales are reported separately, and international sales seem difficult to find.

It is hard to see what’s really going on. Wouldn’t the dropping of Sonic out of the Orion plant production have resulted in something like a doubling of Bolt production (still on one shift) ? GM’s Barra said there’d be employees added didn’t she ? 20% Bolt increase sounds like almost nothing.

Maybe GM is focusing EV efforts on China production-wise. That and the fact that there’s no real competition yet at the sub $40k MSRP level (sure doesn’t look like Tesla will do their $35k anytime soon).

Or does it all mean that GM’s hunkering down for the $7,500 USA tax credit phase out as it currently stands. Who knows.

I wonder how this might effect global EV production?

Good question.

On one hand, limited supplies of lithium and cobalt mean that PHEV with smaller batteries will help bring about the most miles driven on electricity (ie., offset the most fossil fuel usage, greenhouse gas emissions, and pollution).

On the other hand, limited supplies of REE mean that longer range, pure battery electrics will help bring about the most miles driven on electricity (PHEVs typically require two motors).

We just got a coupon for $15 off of an oil and filter change from the dealer where we bought our Bolt a year ago, in July, when they had over a dozen lined up to choose from.

Checking their site today, they have one Bolt. It is a white LT, with DC fast charging, Comfort and Convenience Package...just like ours...plus the Driver Confidence Package. It appears we could get it today for a grand less than we paid, despite having an additional $495 option.

Their current stock:

Bolt EV 1
Express Cargo Van 1
Express Passenger Van 1
Impala 3
Volt 4
Spark 5
Suburban 7
Trax 19
Cruze 19
Tahoe 21
Traverse 39
Corvette 41
Camaro 44
Colorado 47
Malibu 51
Equinox 68
Silverado 1500/2500/3500 76

So the Bolt is a popular as the full size vans.

At least your dealer was smart enough to order that Bolt with DCFC!

That dealer is offering their Equinoxes for under $19K to under $30K. How many electric ones do you think they would sell at $40-46K, with 60 kWh battery, and 150 mile range, or $46-52K, with 90 kWh pack, and 234 miles range?

I'm somewhat baffled by this. I was told right here on this forum that once the FedCred countdown begins, GM will release a torrent of Bolts onto the American public. Here we are, one month into the first stage and this dealer only has one? Maybe they were right, they must have sold the hundred or so they had allocated for this month. May have to wait till November till the next dozen car carriers of Bolts arrives.

I think your efficiency numbers are a bit off, but the answer would be quite a few people would pay $40,000 to $46,000 for an Equinox EV. With basic aero treatments and low rolling resistance tires like the Bolt EV, an Equinox EV would likely see >200 miles of EPA range out of a 60 kWh battery. Ideally, they'd up it to 70-75 kWh, which would result in closer to 240 to 250 miles of EPA range.

Remember, the ICE Equinox gets 39 mpg. It's a fairly efficient platform.

Or it could be selective reading. I'm pretty sure it's also been stated multiple times that those dealerships that make selling plug-ins a lower priority will receive fewer allocations.

Regardless, the current U.S. inventory has already ballooned to 4,805 Bolt EVs available for purchase as of this post, and numerous dealerships I know of that were having difficulty getting Bolt EVs are now starting to get them on the lot.

For what it's worth, the dealership where I bought my Bolt EV has one more 2019 Bolt EV in stock than they do 2018 and 2019 Equinox.

My local dealer has almost double the number of Bolts compared to Equinoxes. Imagine that. They have more Bolts than anything else actually!
