We recently acquired a 2017 Bolt and find it won't charge on our Level 2 SPX Express charger. We've used that charger for 6 years on our old Volt and most recently on our Mercedes 250e (full electric EV) and it has worked perfectly. Won't work on the Bolt though. The car appears to be fine, the stock supplied 110V charger works as it should, and yes, I've set the charging to immediate so that's not the issue. The SPX shows it's ready to go but when I plug in to the Bolt the charger flashes a malfunction code off and on as it tries to connect. Eventually it stops trying or I get the yellow "waiting to charge" light on the Bolt, but it never charges. Something is preventing the charger and the Bolt getting connected during the "handshake". Anyone have any clues how to make this work? I'm really not anxious to buy a new level 2 charger.

Your 110 V test probably means the car is OK. You may wish to try a commercial (hopefully free) Level 2 EVSE to be sure it is either in the SPX or, as you proffered, in the “handshake”. I have no hints on tricking it to accept the amperage offer.

No luck with the charger I'm afraid. I e-mailed Bosch twice and got zero reply so doubt they're going to be any help. The Bolt works on other level 2 chargers fine, just not on my SPX Express. Based on lots of internet searching it appears there is some issue with how the charger grounds that the Bolt doesn't like. Kind of a bummer as we really need a level 2 charger so I guess I'll be buying another. Anyone have any experience with Duosida chargers?

I have been using a Duosida 16 amp charger with my 2017 Bolt for nearly a year now and the charger has worked perfectly. I began charging with the GM-supplied charger with a 220 to 110 adapter but found that its 16 gauge cord got uncomfortably hot. That's when I checked into portable charge cords like the Duosida. The Duosida was among the cheapest but was rated well. I found out that its cord is a nice hefty 12 gauge - appropriate for 16 amp, 220 charging. for the nearly 1 year I've been using it there has never been any issue. I just leave the cord plugged into the wall, then just plug in the J1772 into the car when I want to charge. Fully reliable and convenient.
