Because it is going in the wrong direction. Vehicles need to get smaller, not larger.

If they make a longer car than the EUV to get 60+ kWh in, then it is already bigger than the EUV, and approaching Model Y size.
I agree with you, and would be extremely disappointed if the next Bolt approaches the Model Y in size. That vehicle is humongous in my world. The current EUV is nearly 20 inches shorter than the Model Y.

Wait the new Bolt is 17.5" longer?! Are you kidding me?
I think he meant to say the MY is that much longer in response to me saying the EUV is nearly 20 inches shorter.

My wife won't drive the Bolt EV. Said it's too small. She won't drive the F150. Said it's too big. Her SUV is just right.

Mama Bear.

I like the cars from the 40's to 60's. Real cars with real room. Real trunks where you can fit half a house in them. Big tires with big springs so you can drive on dirt roads. Real leather seats like you get in your living room.

I'm currently watching "The Rockford Files" on DVD. The land barges in the obligatory car chase scenes going after him in his Firebird are a sight to behold.

The show's great in that it showcases cars. Just finished one from Season 2 where guest Blair Brown drives a 260z. There's even a web site that documents all the cars seen during the show's run:

Me too...just not American farm machinery, but real cars from Europe. ;)

I love small cars that I can afford. On my small cars now, I put the biggest tires the wheels wells will accept, as much as 8% to 9% greater in diameter than OE tires & wider tires, too. The big tires eliminate the busy vibration of small cars. My big-tired small cars handle the highways a lot smoother now, potholes are gentled, & make long drives comfortable & pleasant. No, I did not have to give up my small cars, with bigger tires that give big car feel.

. So, I don't understand all the hand wringing and consternation about dropping the ever so slightly smaller and lighter version.

An older thread: & elsewhere I've mentioned the advantage of the sub-14foot long Chevy Bolt EV for its short vehicle Ferry discount.

I've always liked small cars for traveling up ever narrowing deadends, so I can walk in wild places. Or being able to sneak up narrow & windy mountain roads to get to hiking trails & without leaving badly dug trenches & sending all the rocks & tire shavings down-mountain into the streams that big vehicles & tires do. My small cars have allowed me to come around mountain road corners quietly enough, that surprised Eagles scurry into the air just feet in front of me, or catch sight of surprised deer, coyotes & Bobcats. People make up excuses why they want bigger cars. But me, give me small, to be able to accomplish the most, without squashing the Earth too much. I've created more junk than I should have on this planet. But at least, I never advocated that other people NEEDED BIGGER STUFF, when little stuff did the trick. With my small cars, I'll leave a little less junk behind when I die.

Your ferry situation is a special case, and I hope you are able to get a nice used Bolt EV soon. It's a ways away, but Victory Chevrolet has around 100 buyback Bolts for sale. They are in Kansas but will ship anywhere. Prices are as low as around $12k. I think that's before the up to $4000 used EV tax credit, although you won't get quite that much since it can't be more than 25% of the purchase price.

www.boltcountry.com will take you straight to their Bolt listings.

I like small cars too. For comparison with your Elantras, the EUV is actually shorter by 8 inches, and no wider. It really is a small car, just not quite short enough for your ferry discount.

As soon as the 2025 Boltium offers preorders, I’m going to reserve one for my wife. The Bolt has been the best vehicle we’ve ever owned. Just an amazing EV for the money.
I’m interested, but I’ll wait to see if the Boltium is an upgrade or a downgrade to the Bolts we now know. I’ve seen many cases where just because it’s new doesn’t mean it’s better.

Well, from what I understand, it’s basically going to be the same body as the Bolt EUV except with Ultium motors and battery pack, which we already know from the Chevy Silverado EV are ridiculously good. The only downside I’ve experienced with my current Bolt EUV is the 55 kW DC fast charge rate and that is spectacularly addressed by Ultium. So I feel pretty confident about putting in a preorder sight unseen.

What is an Ultium motor? I thought the point was to get the EUV back into production ASAP, but with a cheaper battery. I haven't heard of any improvement in GM's motors since the Bolt came out

GM has stated in the past that all Ultium models will have a heat pump, so that would be one change for the Boltium. With the other changes to the battery and other HV pieces, it's certainly possible they make some sort of change to the EV motor. I don't think we'll really know many details until they announce the new version.

Thanks for the link to the latest Bolt info. I'm disappointed it's going to be at the end of 2025 basically, in November. That's assuming no delays too. OTOH, I'm thrilled if it's true the Bolt will be assembled in Kansas! That means another UAW sticker, and US jobs. That vaults the Boltium to the top of our next EV list, if it's good. :)

GM may want to use one of the motors for Ultium EVs. This might make more sense for economies of scale, instead of resurrecting the motor used only in the Bolt. In the ICE world anyway new engines go into old platforms all the time. I guess we'll just have to see how much the old Bolt will be retained and how much will be new. You are probably right, these new motors may not be measurably superior.

How is that better than Orion, Michigan?

I don't see anything on that list that would be appropriate for the new Bolt. The PM motors are too big, and probably too long to fit half shafts in a Bolt sized car. The induction motor might fit, but would be a step down in performance, and efficiency.

That's a good point about the motors. The article I linked is from three years ago, so maybe by now an additional "Ultium" motor or two are in the works. Or, perhaps it will be the same one as the recently discontinued Bolt, which certainly is good enough.

I was concerned the new Bolt might end up being produced in Mexico along with the Equinox and Blazer EVs. While that's preferable to China in my book, the ideal to me is the US at a UAW plant. Fairfax, KS automatically puts the Bolt ahead of every other similar size EV that's not both assembled in the US and by the UAW. It's not a litmus test though, it's everything else being roughly equal, and at a minimum it would certainly be a tie breaker.

Orion would have been fine too. Our late Volt came out of D-Ham (now Factory Zero), and my 2011 Cruze Eco out of Lordstown. So, 100% US assembled and UAW assembled since 2011 in our garage. (Well, except the 2006 Mazda 3 from Hiroshima that was junked about 4 years ago) I'd like to keep it US/UAW if reasonably possible.
