This feels sort of landscape-changing. I am deeply bummed out by this news.

 

Perhaps because I have a 1H2019 but I'm rather encouraged by this announcement. Certainly seems like they're on top of something as they would not replace all 2020 - 2022 with the same batteries. They're proactive, that's a good thing.
It's either that or they'll go under, eventually.
edit: just saw the "a torn anode tab and folded separator" news. I'd think that just one of those defects would be enough to spark a fire but I'm no expert.

Because the 2020 Bolt burned, and maybe because of the ID3 too. LG, and the entire legacy auto industry may have a problem...Houston.

 

I'm thinking my 2017 with four years of charging history is now the safest of the bunch.

 

Me too I got lucky I guess and my 2017 has 74k miles and I love it ! bought it with 67K and been in a little fender bender but $17,800 was doable. its a Premier looks brand new.

 

GM just got hammered on CNBC. This gets worse every day.

My wife just sent me a link. I was happy till now, not sure how I'll handle it. I'm not particuarly concerned as I have only run mine down below to 38 miles one time and very seldom below half. Mostly leave it plugged in but only use 12A charger. I charge to 85 or 90 percent most all of the time. Leaving in a few days for a 18 day motorcycle trip and trying to sort out how to handle it. Don't want to leave it outside but may have wife charge it outside but park inside when not charging.

 

I'm planning on mostly parking my Bolt the next few months. Just did a target charge to 50% and leaving it alone...unplugged. As long as it doesn't get cold this is probably the safest bet. Lithium is happy at 50%.

 

The press release indicates that the two defects they've identified are "a torn anode tab and folded separator":

This is more information, and specific information, than we've had before. I have no idea how a dealer service technician will be able to diagnose a torn anode tab and a folded separator inside a cell. The only thing that can be done is to implement improved QA / QC processes at the factory to detect these defects so that newly manufactured packs are known to be without these defects.

My conclusion is that everyone will be getting all new battery modules - including people who just bought their new Bolts today.

 

Oh boy....this is getting ugly.

How long to replace battery packs in a couple of hundred thousand vehicles? We're wondering if we can just cancel our lease and go lease a Mach-E or a Tesla Y. We absolutely love our 2020P...would hate to see it go.

 

That's bad news. Does this mean there are currently no safe Bolt batteries available? This going to be a LONG recall if so.

 

I would not want to be manning the EV Consierge Line right now.

 

They were very professional and nice a month ago when I initiated my buyback. But the volume is going to be even higher now.

 

I just bought my 2022 EV a little over a month ago. Wondering if Washington Lemon Law could get me a buyback since there's no way in heck that the issue will be fixed in 30 days. At this point I'd prefer it, and to move into something else. LOVE The 22 Bolt- but NOT loving the situation. At all.

With a 2020P which I love and don't do deep discharges or charge it fast so figure it will be a long wait for a recall as I'm not in the higher priority group. They have mode lots of Volts and don't recall battery fires being any kind of issue with them.

Here's the good thing from my perspective.
If it takes a year or so (assuming my car doesn't catch fire), then my 5+ year old Bolt with over 100K by then, will probably get a new battery. ;-)

I am in the same boat as p7wang, not sure just how long this will take for my recall to get done.

 

LG Chem might go Bankrupt on this one. Just like Takata did with the air bag recall. Hyundai already is doing a total recall on all of their LG Chem packs.
GM will need a new partner for the to-be-released Ultium packs as well, because LG was part of the Ultium too.

Not a chance...
Way too much money in batteries and they have way to much value in patents, etc...
It will be a hit for them, but that's all...
(Assuming it is those two issues identified and they can make sure those aren't an issue moving forward..)

 

Maybe GM will find it easier to just buy us out of our lease.....it's only four months old.

 

They just need to refund everyone and have us drop the cars off at the dealer. Heck if they give me 15k i will keep my 2020 as is.

 

I'm thinking it's a fundamental design/architecture issue. Before we get good batts.... They are gonna have to redesign.... That's gonna take a while.
