The City of San Luis Obispo, California adopted an ordinance that required EV charging stations at every new development. CA code requires just the infrastructure for future stations. The city took it a step further and required the actual charging station. As a result, in just one year there are nearly 300 plugs approved and are in development/construction!

In the grand scheme of things it probably increased project costs by a very marginal amount since the EVCS will be installed during construction. Of course, retroactive work is much, much more expensive. This is not only great news for all EV drivers in the area, but also for residents at apartments. Because charging access is a major obstacle to the transition to EVs, having a place to plug in every night could very well cause more people to make the switch.

The full ordinance and complete story are in the article below. Please share the ordinance with your city council to try to get them to pass something similar!

I really wish SLO could have gotten that Recargo charging site in. I'm not sure what the holdup was (possibly scope creep), but having four 150 kW chargers off of Highway 101 on Calle Joaquin would have been great.
Very true. I have been trying to monitor that site but it has seem to have vanished. It was suppose to be operational by this year per city documents. Perhaps EA can put a station in SLO. It would definitely get a lot of attention given the tourism and the largest urban area in the county.

Recargo's grant from the California Energy Commission got pulled because they were taking too long to build their sites. My understanding is that those funds are not transferable to another charging provider, so they are lost forever. It really sucks because, if I remember correctly, SLO was providing matching funds.

What a shame. Thanks for the info.

A DCFC location near downtown would be terrific. The EvGo at Marigold Center is not bad, but it's definitely not walking distance from heart of the city.
