From the story:
They discovered that they can be charged five times faster than previously thought without damage. Such speeds would reduce battery life, but if used judiciously, the impact would be minimized, ...
I don't doubt this based on my home charging of 18650 li-ion batteries. Fast charging does kill the lifespan of batteries quickly. But the reality is even though everybody claims they want to drive across country on some weekly basis, they don't. So the averages are one out-of-range trip about 3x per year, and super fast charging those few times would likely have negligible long term affect on the battery.

But the downside is a 5x faster charge rate would involve a charging station capable of what? 80kW x 5? 400kW ultra-super-duper charger? With the public charging station connected directly to a nuclear power plant?
