Hi all. I woke today and went to start my bolt and it's like the entire electrical system stopped working overnight. It wasn't charging and wasnt low in juice at all. The car won't power on, the display is dark, the charger won't connect and the door locks don't work. Any suggestions or things to try to before I bring it in to a dealership? Craig

Probably the 12 volt battery. If the door won't open, pull the physical key from your fob, and gently pop the small plastic cover off the driver's door handle. This will expose a normal key hole. Once you are in the car, you can pop the hood, and get somebody to jump the 12 volt battery.

Dang! I missed that you obviously already got in the car, so you don't need to use the physical lock. Sorry.

I'd give 4:1 odds that it's the 12V AGM auxiliary battery. Over twenty years of of EV driving has shown me that 90%+ of the time you get odd behaviors...it's the aux battery failing.
Which begs the question; why is the 12-volt battery there at all? I work on a variety of machinery which may have requirements for several different voltages. The needs are supplied by transformers, some wound, some solid state. With 21st-century electrics/electronics in the Bolt main power system, why is it necessary that the Bolt and most other BEVs have a separate 19th century 12-volt battery?

There are many electric bicycles, scooters, and motorcycles that don't have one, as well as DIY car conversions. For OEMs, as far as I know, only Tesla is now saying they will be getting rid of theirs...eventually.

The only reason I can think of is for some reason the traction battery crashes (like the MSD fuse blowing) you have back up to run the 4-way flashers, cabin lights and a call to OnStar.
Otherwise a DC to DC converter direct from the 400 volt battery (there is already one) should suffice. I think it is a safety redundancy type of thing. What is more annoying to me is that there is not a 12 volt gauge or light anywhere to see how the lowly lead acid, poor cousin to the mighty Li-Ion is doing. Kinda standard in every other car in the known universe.
