I've never been quite sure how much stuff like this influences people - and there are a lot of questions I have about how stripped down this car was to achieve it's goals (like battery thermal management anyone??? not necessary for this type of application so meaningless for street cars, but no details)

I know I'm happy to see it - and it does a lot to raise the profile of EV's in the racing world - the hard core racing teams are only now grudgingly accepting the possibility of a potential future where EV's out perform their favorited ICE monstrosities for which they have a lot of invested blood/sweat/tears… this new fangled EV stuff is just for "toys"....and they don't believe you until you go out and kick their asses in races…so +1 for VW

what really really impressed me about this is they beat EVERYONE and by a significant margin - this is no question that car was a revelation to the pike's peak crowd…how it translates to real world is a little harder.

but kudos none the less and I know I"m excited, but I'm a soft/easy target for good EV news, it's one of my biases.

Exciting news daveo4Bolt. I think we share a lot of common ground here. Be prepared to see just about every possible speed record broken by up and coming EV technology over the next few years. The real race hasn't started yet!

And the driver said that he was taking it easy, to make sure and finish for VW. He felt that he was going much slower than the final time!!!

oh I know electric race cars exist and I know about Formula 1 - but in the case of pikes's peek - the EV won in an "open" field - i.e. it beat _ALL_ other comers regardless of power source…that is significant and a major wake up call to the people that think electric is a 'nitch'…

Yeah. I never did like "neesh".

Electric race cars are a joke. No deafening roar ( V8 to V12) or deafening howl/whine (turbo4-flat6). No smell of burnt aircraft fuel or burn methanol (Indycar). No smell of toasted brakes (E car regen). No flames out the exhausts associated with advanced ignition in full power. No twang of the turbo or supercharger on overrun.

If I’m ever forced to go to a E car race I’ll take a pillow and get a good nap.

Imagine a BEV vehicle in the Le Mans 24. It’d take about 10 days to run 24 hours on the track. 24 hours racing and another 9 days in the pits charging. Fun eh. At least an E car race wouldn’t bother the neighbors.

While I do agree that the visceral experience is very different . EV and EV Racing IS the future

I Raced 2 stroke dirt and Street bikes, Vintage bikes running Castrol R (Ahhhh that smell !) . worked on F1 cars in the late 70s (Ahhhhh that sound)... Am a DE instructor still today and also instruct with AFM motorcycles.
It IS different but this is the up coming technology. Think how may race tracks we have lost just because of noise. Heck Laguna Seca is now 90 db.
I restore Air Cooled cars.

So I get what you are saying ..

I will compete in the electric Super Motard class this year and the Racing is close/ fierce/ exciting and FAST.
If you don't look at that PPHC EV run as Motoring History.
EV performance (all aspects of that) will quickly override the lost ancillary portions of what you mention.

Look out Le Mans ... It will happen
