EVgo changes terms of service.

Basically, they do not want people using adapters other than those from automakers. They also do not want home built or modified EVs or those with modified chargers.

Seems like they do not want Tesla drivers to use this: CCS Adapter | SETEC POWER .

Or anything like the Vanagon with Bolt drivetrain plugging in.

Got the email today too....here's the text:
-------------------------------------------------

Thank you for being an EVgo customer. EVgo is always working to serve our community of EV drivers with safety and reliability as our first priorities. With that in mind and a goal of being as open and transparent with our users as possible, we are notifying our customers of a change to our Terms of Service related to charging services and adapters permitted at EVgo stations as well as other minor updates to the Terms of Service.

Our updated Terms of Service will go into effect on Monday, February 22, 2021.

In an effort to easily convey the changes from the former version of our Terms of Service here are the highlights:

Authorized Charging Adapters
For your safety, EVgo only permits the use of automaker-manufactured charging adapters on EVgo charging stations or with EVgo’s charging network (“Authorized Adapters”). EVgo prohibits the use of all other adapters (“Unauthorized Adapters”) on EVgo’s network and charging stations.

Prohibition of Home-Built Electric Vehicles, Modified Vehicles, and Modified Chargers

Similarly, EVgo prohibits the use of all home-built electric vehicles, home-built onboard chargers, and vehicles that contain personally-modified chargers (“Unauthorized Vehicles and Chargers”).

Promotional Programs
EVgo continues to support a number of automaker promotional programs that offer free or discounted charging to EVgo customers, and those programs may have additional terms and conditions.

Clarifications on Personal Use
EVgo accounts are non-transferrable.

The full Terms of Service, including revisions referred to in this email, are on the EVgo website at www.evgo.com/terms-service/. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to EVgo Customer Support, 24/7 if you have questions or require assistance at [email protected] or call 877-494-3833.

Thank you for choosing EVgo and driving electric!

Sincerely,

Your Fast Charging Friends at EVgo

This feels like somebody in legal had too much time on their hands. By all means, they can and should state that they will not support untested, uncertified hardware. But instead of a blanket statement of all the stuff that is prohibited, they could have simply stated that they have a list of certified equipment, included a link to it, and that if you have questions or equipment not on that list, to contact them. It would accomplish the same thing (safety, release from liability) without simply preventing whole classes of equipment from being used there.

Not a great look.

This is 100% because EVGo now has a deal with Tesla. Tesla has exerted influence to shut out SETEC Power, and also shut out any repaired salvage title Tesla's. If you take a salvage tesla to "EV garage" and get DCFC turned back on, you are now in violation of EVGo terms of service if you charge it on their network.

The price was $660 or so (Setec CCS to Tesla Adapter) for a limited time. Part of the reason why Tesla drivers want and alternative is some folks have salvage title cars where Supercharging is disabled by Tesla and basically can't be re-enabled.

And, some folks are looking for an alternative to the CHAdeMO Adapter which dropped in price to $400. They want the possibility of a faster than 50 kW charging rate and the ability to use the plethora of CCS handles at EA sites since EA stacked the deck in favor of VW AG products and VW AG interests by installing installing 5 to 7 CCS handles at each site (w/150+ kW capability) and a single CHAdeMO handle, usually throttled to 50 kW. Woe is the user if the single CHAdeMO handle is down/its charger is down.

What @Fivedoor said. When Setec announced an adapter, Tesla was quick to announce they would also offer an adapter. But now, after Setec's adapter is out and barely works, we hear crickets from Tesla.

Tesla doesn't just disable Supercharging, they disable all DCFC charging... if you have a salvage Tesla and a CHAdeMO adapter you still can not use a CHAdeMO plug because all DCFC charging is disabled. You can go to an aftermarket shop like "EV Garage" (started by Rich from Rich Rebuilds) and have it turned back on... but by doing so you are in violation of EVGo's new terms of service if you use an EVGo station with your CHAdeMO adapter.

That's what some people thought but at least one person over at TMC has a salvage Tesla w/Supercharging disabled but CHAdeMO charging works.

Given how much public funding EVgo has received, I think a few calls to the PUC and other consumer advocacy groups will have this sorted out quickly. As long as the vehicle is adhering to accepted safety protocols, programming language, and using UL listed parts, they should not be excluded. Associating access with specific automakers, however, is discriminatory. SAE, UL, etc. standards are standards for a reason.
