So last week I get in the ol' Bolt and start it up as usual. After the usual splash screen, I get a red battery icon below the DIC, and another one that looks like a car with a exclamation mark thru it. Then, a message show us on the DIC:"Battery Charging System needs service". I drove it to the store anyway. Everything else seemed normal. No other warnings. The battery icon eventually went away on the way home, but the other light remained, as it did for the next day an a half. Then it too disappeared. Car behaves normally.
I happened to get a call from the dealership regarding my first free service call, so while I had her on the line, I mentioned the warning light situation and we scheduled a service call for the following Wednesday morning. (This was a Friday)
Dropped off the car at 10am today and also asked them to check my cell voltage levels to make sure I didn't have a cell that had gone bad, as I'd noticed considerable range reduction over the winter. And while a lot of that has been recovered in the recent warmer weather of coming Spring, it's not all back yet. The service writer said it might be a while before he knows anything as he only has one "Bolt guy" today, but he'd get back to me as soon as they knew something. Got a call about 1pm saying they needed to replace the Battery Disconnect Relay, the culprit of the warning lights. He asked if I could leave it overnight as he couldn't get the part till the next morning. Sure, no prob. No mention of cell voltages yet. See what comes back tomorrow.
I expected a "certain amount" of cold weather range reduction, but seeing as how this was a relatively mild Winter temperature-wise for Nor-Cal, nothing below 32F, I was surprised to find only 169 miles of range after a night's charge. That's pretty significant. The temps are getting back near 70 now and only 40 at night, and a night's charge is getting me 190 miles. That's still 40 miles short of nominal. And is why I'm interested in the cell readout. Or am I being overly concerned?
