Our nanNY State laws are absolutely ridiculous. But none of this discussion even touched the fact that GM also disabled the playback of audio only .mp4 files. Are you saying that GM software cannot tell the difference between audio and video? Because Windows can...

That's between Tesla and NY State. I remember this being an issue in NY several years ago so I searched for an article and found one (cited below).

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/playing-at-an-suv-near-you-porn/
"A driver in Schenectady, N.Y., was arrested last month after rolling past police with a DVD titled "Chocolate Foam" playing on the passenger-side sun visor in his Mercedes-Benz, authorities said. The movie also was rolling on screens set into the car's headrests.

The driver was accused of breaking state laws prohibiting watching TV while driving, ..."
You were never able to watch videos while driving in a Bolt (with the built-in infotainment system) it only worked when parked. Would have been of great use while charging.

If only we had a pocketable device we could always have with us that was capable of displaying video....
You must have really big pockets. One of the things that kept me from getting a smartphone, until this year, is that they are too big to fit in a pocket, but too small for anybody over 40 to see. In theory they are great. In practice there are lots of problems...kind of like EVs.

Watching a video on the Bolt's infotainment system compared to looking at a tiny phone screen, not exactly the same thing.

Even my tablet (8" screen) is smaller than the Bolt's screen and I don't even carry that around because it's too big.

The simple fact is that there was no good reason to take that feature away from us.

So everyone here is too proud to wear bifocals.....

My late production 2017 had 14.5 software already installed so no update necessary. My 2017 Silverado has had several OTA updates, as far as I can tell, they are related to apps for listening to podcasts.

GM HAS NO PLAN OTA Updates by 2023!

I tweeted to @Chevrolet the following: "Hi there, when can the Chevy Bolt 2017 owners can expect a software update from version 14.5?? I hear that bolt 2019 are already at version 30+.." here's what I got: "Thanks for your continued patience, We're unable to speculate when a new software update would be available for your Bolt EV. Your servicing dealership is in the best position to provide the latest updates, if and when they become available. In the meantime, please let us know if you have any other questions. " I posted again: "The dealership is usually the last one to know... I do not expect for the updates to be weekly or monthly like some other EV manufacturers ( hint hint Tesla), but c'mon at least twice a year. please relay the message to your supervisors . If I don't hear from them within a month I will post this on your public feed. Thanks!" To which they said: "Hi, We do apologize for any dissatisfaction, and we have been sure to document these sentiments for further review. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please let us know." So, why not all of us LET THEM KNOW that we want software updates?

I wish my 17 could get the update that lets you specify heat only, or AC only - really the only thing I wish they would add. I would pay for that update.

Maybe that's what GM wants? ;-) but yeah I'd be willing to do that as well if it's reasonable, say $100 or so...but c'mon they should do it for free at least during the standard warranty period....

My local dealer initially wanted to charge me to enable the “Afterblow” feature until we figured out a way to get the 5 min configuration done through the bumper to bumper warranty. I swear.

Compare this to my co-workers Tesla who got FOUR new features this past month for free...including a feature that extended his range and increased his HP by 10%. His Model 3 is super nice but I have to say the build quality is a little dodgy. The passenger handle didn’t work when I tried to get in and the rear badging was super crooked. Plus the other vehicles on his proximity display looked like they were all twerking. I expect more from such an expensive car.

How about everyone here tweets to @mtbarra
Hi there, when can the Chevy Bolt 2017 owners can expect a software update from version 14.5?? Or 2018boat owners version 20.X.X I know that Bolt 2019 are already at version 30+... Other electric car manufacturers have monthly OTA updates... Why wouldn't Chevy keep pace with Tesla?
Thank you for your attention to this issue.

The loos of the MP4 capability is nuts.

The infotainment system knows when the car is moving. Why not just unlock the MP4 capability when the car is in park?

I'm told that Tesla's allow users to play games using the steering wheel as a controller while charging. Sure GM can provide a safe mode for movie viewing that will satisfy state DOT's.

I figured they removed it so they didn't have to pay a license fee on the codec.
