You will have to use GM’s system developed with Google.

Fortunately the Bolt will continue to have it.

After reading the article, it begins to make sense. Tesla has already gone this direction, as has Rivian and a few others, I believe.

Google Maps will still be available through Android Automotive, and it will be more flexible than using an external projection system through one's phone

My concern is that GM is going to turn everything into yet another subscription service, so we'll have to pay for services that used to be complimentary from our phones. Knowing GM, that's exactly what they are going to do.

Like @FlashBoltEUV concern, a subscription service is something I am not interested in. Also, I like to use ABRP through the CarPlay app and would hate to lose it. Unless GM allows integration by third-party vendors, I just don't like it.

If they do this, I will no longer purchase GM vehicles. I use my Wireless Carplay every day and I won't purchase a new vehicle without it.

Hopefully, there will be enough people like myself that GM will change course (probably not).

Not a smart move, they need to offer choices, eg this new system the default but the option to use CarPlay or Android…

Agreed. It should at least work off your phone's hotspot. But even hotspot has limits and may get throttled before rest at new month start.

I guess we are going back to buying phone holders to mount our phones on the vent or dash.

Lack of Android Auto is why I turned down Tesla (and prior to that, Mini)...
Ford might gain a customer in the next 5 years ;)

Pretty much all auto makers vision of the future, IMO!

I am all for subscription service !
Give me a car with everything in it, at a base price, and let me chose what I want and when I want to enable specific items. The more specific the item, the better. I have enough of "packages".

I am only using CarPlay for running Maps and MyChevrolet app in the Infotainment screen of the car. If I have both of them from the system itself, I don't really need CarPlay. I have a subscription for XM and that's probably all what I need to have an enjoyable trip.

The article I read said it's already definitive, starting with the 2024 Blazer EV. They're only going to do this on EVs, interestingly. So the Equinox EV will likely also have no Carplay/AA.

Interesting. I wonder if this is a version of Android Automotive (not Android Auto) that integrates vehicle OS with infotainment functions, similar to Polestar. It would follow with their announcement in 2021 to use Android Automotive.

Having said that, Android Automotive does support Apple CarPlay (doesn't need to support Android Auto, since it would offer the same functionality / apps). So Polestar was forced to add CarPlay because of customer demand, and I wonder if GM will end up in the same position. Put me in the camp of, "Let's wait and see."

If true, that's quite a mistake IMHO. Having used CarPlay in Bolt, rental cars and my '22 Niro EV spanning several years, I actually really like it.

Hope other automakers who support it now (almost everyone except Tesla + a tiny set of others) don't follow suit.

If it's something like this 👇 I don't see why people would be pissed. Most of the owners are using Android phones anyway. IMO a lot of people have an opinion about what they don't know. And that's sad.

So they're getting rid of Apple Carplay and giving away free cellular service for life? How else would you incorporate your network service that you're already paying into your car without paying another subscription fee?

I did a test drove a Polstar 2 and was very pleased with the Android Automotive. If GM puts that into their cars I will be pleased. No more needing the charge my phone while on trips due to AA power drain.

Per the article link from the OP is will be for 8 years, not life - I hope mine is more than 8 years.

I have a Poleatar 2 which was the first vehicles with Android Automotive. Nothing beats it. I've had Tesla and it doesn't come close to my infotainment on my Polestar. As more mainstream cars start to morph over the Android automotive, it will only get better and better. There is nothing to fear here.

I'm surely an outlier on this, but might strongly prefer what the GM/Google solution is.
That's because I travel with an iPad, not iPhone... and Carplay is not supported on the iPad.. only iPhone. 😢

In any case ... it's possible the GM/Google solution may be even more functional and user friendly than Carplay. When I see how much GM improved (IMO) ergonomics in my 2023 Bolt compared to my 2021 (I'm thinking, for example, how GM took some functions out of the touchscreen and put them into excellently designed manual switches) I have some confidence, or at least hope, that they're really into creating functionality and have some good engineers onto it.🤞

iPhone market share in the US is I believe slightly over 50%, so your statement certainly has no stand. So Android users might not care, iPhone users might not buy future GM vehicles anymore - I'd be one of the latter
