It is pretty insane that this individual actually suffered the issue and is in debt, while many have had their cars repurchased by submitting a claim over the concern this recall created and walked away with a new car + a check. I declined the repurchase but negotiated compensation, receiving a check for 6 months worth of lease payments and will be credited for the lease termination fee. It's not right that I got that and they stiffed him. It would, basically, cost them nothing to put him in a new car.

The contrast in treatment is quite baffling.

Yes, but keep in mind.
Even if the fire voided the warranty because of the specific wording of the warranty, it doesn't mean GM isn't still responsible for the damage if the fire was caused by the battery.
It just means they are responsible, regardless of the warranty. ;-)
