I just want to run the fan with outside air with no AC/Heat conditioning. for example I press the defrost button, deselect heat, not on auto, select outside air, and the GOM reduces. verified with engine link that either the heater AC is kicking in.

darn I just want to run the fan with outside air?!?!?

Help

I go through a whole routine with the '17 Bolt. Push the far left soft power button to "Off". Hit the fan control button to increase the air flow. The ac/heat button activates, so I push it to turn it off. The recirculate button needs to be pushed again to allow fresh air in. (I've set the automatic defog to "off" permanently. What a confusing mess !

The far left button must be on for air flow of any kind. I always leave it on. After that I decide whether I want just air, or Heat/AC. Next I set fan speed. Then I select outside air or recirculated air. Nothing comes on automatically.

Frustrating that we don't have separate control of Heat and AC. I would love it if somebody with a newer Bolt, with separate Heat and AC buttons, would check on Torque Pro to verify that they actually are completely separate on the newer version.

I have a 2019 so it's a little different with separate buttons. I turn the system "On", then hit the recirc button to pull in outside air, then set temp to something like 70, turn AC off (no light on AC or Heat) and adjust fan to my liking.

That USUALLY works. The GOM goes up and tells me the compressor isn't running. However sometimes the AC will come back on by itself, without the light on the screen coming on. GOM range goes down and the air gets noticeably colder. I have to turn the AC on then off again for it to stop the compressor. I think it's a software bug.

I have the 2019 as well and don't have that issue. Double check that you have the Automatic Defrost turned off.

2018 bolt. Auto defog off. Ambient temp ~5c. Climate controls are off. 240km range. Turn system on with the auto button on the temp dial. Climate controls on in full auto, heat & ac light on, range drops to ~220km. Push the heat and ac button turning off the light. Range doesn't change at all. Open torque pro. Shows the cabin heater is pulling 1.5 to 2 kw. Turn the temp dial down and torque pro shows the heater pulling 0 watts. Turn the climate controls completely off and range returns to 240kms.

The heat and ac botton being off does not actually turn off the heater in cooler weather.

Have you tried turning off Auto by pushing the Auto button to make the light go out? On our 2017 that is how you turn Auto off. Then pushing the Heat/AC button does what you would expect. We never use Auto.
Either the 2018 is different from the 2017 in this or you're mistaken. I just tried it to confirm. Pushing the auto button while the light is lit does nothing. The auto light remains lit. Pushing the heat & ac button turns off both the heat & ac light and the auto light. This is how every vehicle that I've owned with an auto hvac system worked.

The auto button only turns on auto and any intervention overriding the auto therefore turns it off.

Sorry. faulty memory. As I said, I never use the Auto button. I just went out and tried it. You are right. Pushing the auto button doesn't turn the light out. Pushing the Heat/AC button turns the Auto light off. However, the button that normally says Recirculate is replaced by Auto, and the Fan setting bar graph is gone, replaced by Auto. If I push the former Recirculate button, it will go to recirculate. Push it again and it goes to Recirculate off. Pushing the hard fan button gets rid of Auto, and it goes back to displaying the Fan bar graph. Really weird. They make you hit three buttons to get out of Auto. As I said, I never hit that button. It won't get that cold here until Friday night. I will try to remember to check it then. Is your car outside?

There are default settings in the Bolt that has the AC and/or heat come on if it senses too much humidity in the air. Go into your settings and look for climate control and you can opt out of that and only get outside air without a reduction in GOM. I do that even in the winter to avoid the mileage drop.

I went out to the garage this morning. The outside temp had gone down to our lowest this fall, 22 F, but inside the garage was still 50 F. I turned on the car, and Torque Pro. With the knob set to 75 F, but Heat/AC soft button off...no heater. If you are actually parking out in those temps, I probably won't ever be able verify your observations.
