I am guessing when the hatch is open, the rear most plastic panel needs to come off to get to the lights from the hatch area?

I can’t figure outhow that panel is removed properly.

Or are they accessed from the exterior?

in the manual to replace the bulb it states:

To access the bulbs, reach up behind the rear bumper.
