I took the plunge and did the update myself. My motivation was having the nearest Chevy dealer with Bolt certification be 175 miles away. I carefully read all of the directions as shown by Electrek at the beginning of this thread and took some notes. I followed them exactly. I had the instructions open in my iPad while I downloaded on my laptop to an old 512 kB flash drive cleared of all else. It was heartening to see every screen show up exactly as pictured with no deviation. In the Bolt, the same. It took 13 minutes and counted down the seconds with no “freezing”. It restarted twice as described and now I can see the new screens and the new version when I query for it. I accepted the risk, which is not “zero”. I will post immediately if I detect any evidence of malware. Bolts are coming to the tri-state very slowly but I sure hope the “circle of Chevy embarrassment” gets smaller within the next year.

The local dealer applied the GM update to my Premier this morning. It took them a bit of time to locate what it was I was asking for, though. Apparently, the update's key words they were finding were "change (screen) resolution". It is now showing software level 14.4.2. I see that there's another option underneath the 'Software Update' option for pre-downloading future updates. Not sure if it was there before the upgrade.

For Apple CarPlay?

Does this software update have any relevance for those of us using Apple CarPlay? I did have the Infotainment shutdown occur (one time) but not since. It rebooted itself after restarting the vehicle. Everything seems to be working ok now, but do I need to still have the latest software version installed?

14.4.2 Disables playing Videos???

Has this been verified by anyone else? All file types for videos? mp4? HD? If I cannot play a video with 14.4.2 I'll likely stay with what I have, 13.4.0. OR... can I download 14.4.0 or 14.4.1?
Tnx

I saw this confirmed in another thread, in any case my car came with 14.4.2 and I do not have the option to play video files.

There is a "hack" that allows you to play Youtube videos (and even surf websites) in the Bolt while moving (Android Auto required). It's a bit of a hassle as you need to clone the apk of the app, and also be using a certain older version of Android Auto. Google seems **** bent on disabling this "hack" however, so I'm not sure if the developer will be able to continue to counter Google's efforts to kill his app.
Google "Carstream" and you should find it.

Re: Playing Video files...
With version 13.xx you can just put an MP4 file on the USB stick and select the Gallery function. It shows tabs for pictures and movies, and you just pick movies and select the file. I had problems with HD, but SD seem to work fine.

There's also a work around that lets it work with the latest version of AA. ADB commands.

At the 2 year maintenance on my 2017 Bolt, I asked the service dept. to update all software. They refused my request, unless I could describe a problem requiring a software update. Chevy has a long way to go to match the Tesla OTA software updates. BTW - I traded the 2017 for a 2020 Bolt; new software the hard way.
