I've got my car programmed for off peak charging in the evening, but if I want to force it to start charging as soon as I get home.... simply plug it in twice in a row and it'll start charging right away.
Also if you bring it home on empty, it'll charge to 40% and stop, then finish charging during off-peak hours.
