If you remove it I wonder if the dealer or bank contacts you when they don't get a ping off the missing device.
The dealer didn’t install it for theft recovery… they installed it for easy repossession.What a terrible installation job...
There's very little chance a thief wouldn't immediately look for, find & remove that. OnStar has a better chance of helping you, as low as that is.

The salesman got back to me: This is the GPS system they installed on all of the cars when they came in. It needs to be zip-tied back up under the dash.
Looks like I'll try to remove it. I think the actual GPS device is mounted atop of (what looks like) air vents in the driver footwell.
