Mustart EVSE fault when charging.

I installed a 240v 1 phase NEMA 14-50 receptacle feed thru a 50 GFCI breaker from my sub panel. I had purchased a 40amp Mustart EVSE on Amazon because we were originally thinking about purchasing a KIA EV6 and we wanted a portable EVSE. We changed our minds when our 2022 Bolt EUV became available unexpectedly at a great price (We like the Bolt better anyway). The factory OEM EVSE works great and the car charger works as predicted. The Mustart is connected to the same receptacle but always trips on a fault within about 20 minutes of connecting. Mustart was very good about it and sent me a replacement EVSE which unfortunately does the exact same thing. Has anyone had similar experiences?

This is my favorite piece of EV literature ever, thank you for bringing it to us and reminding us it exists lol.

One particular EVSE (MUSTART) has a “fake” CE (Europe) and TUV Rhineland test
lab certification mark

Very useful information! Does anyone know if this also applies to the second version? Perhaps I need to get rid of this one if it's really as bad as the first iteration,...
My advice to absolutely everyone is cheap out on the Smart part if you have to, do not cheap out on the unit itself. Find something reputably certified, has been out for a very long time and most of all, beefy as ****.

Big fan of Grizzl-E myself.

Do not get a MUSTART. Every EV community agrees and has seen several problems.
All the comments here and the fact that the plug got somewhat warm made me paranoid. I retired my three and a half year old Mustart and bought a Grizzl-E. Ironically, the Grizzl-E would fault after eight or nine hours if left plugged in. I returned it for a replacement and the replacement did the same thing. I contacted Grizzl-E and they said it was a known issue with some customers and that they were working on a new firmware. After three or four weeks, they sent me a new unit which has been working like a charm ever since. FWIW.

Sucks, but I guess faulting is better than a fire?

I still say Grizzl-E is a better starting point than people who fake certs. 😁
I thought the reviews were fine on Mstart until I got on the forum.
Take this as a lesson that a lot of reviews on Amazon and other popular sites could possibly be fake / paid for / farmed, especially so for Chinese-made versions of products that are offered at prices below units made elsewhere.
Seems odd that two devices fail. Then different fail. The solution is firmware?? Makes me wonder.
Both models have been used in other places without failure.

I almost started to speculate that it could be something with the electricity supply or someting but this is well out of my depth. It does seem odd on two different units and the same user, but who knows, maybe same defect seen on one production run and buying them so close together? Just so much speculation. Grizzl-E has a very good name.

I have a question - how do you connect the factory EVSE to the same receptacle? The Chevy unit is 115v 15Amps and can only provide 12 amps to the car safely. Are you plugging this into the 50 amp 14-50 plug? How?
I use this: Southwire Gas Range Adapter 9042SW8801

No denying - it's a better charger. It's also capable of 40 amps in case I ever need it. (I did open it and set it to 24 amps so I could use it along with a dryer plug at my parents - worked great). I changed it back to 32 amps when I got back.

Not sure if this is meant as a response to my post. My Mustart never failed - it just got warm on the plug. Two different Grizzl-E units faulted on the same receptacle. I wondered then if there was an issue. When I posted a question about it on Amazon, Grizzl-E responded quickly and said to contact support for a fix. When I contacted them directly, they said said it was a known issue and they were working on a firmware update. I assume since they have a good reputation to uphold that they would have warned me if they felt something was wrong with my wiring (for example). As I said, the replacement unit has worked perfectly.
Just thinking out loud.

At work I'll be asked to look at some system. Once in while the techs will say stuff like we changed this one part 4 times. Sure, once, maybe twice but 4 times? Should we put in number 5? Whoa!

I thought the same thing. The factory (OEM) supplied works with no problem. It came with a NEMA 14-50 plug vs the Mustart which I order with a NEMA 6-50 plug and used an adapter for the 14-50 receptacle. The onboard charger does not use neutral. That is the only thing I can think of that might be causing issues. They did not require I send them back so I am going to see if it has a neutral wire in the cable and I will install a NEMA 14-50 plug instead of the 6-50 it came with.

Based on your location, take a look here. Made in Quebec. EVduty electric vehicle charging stations by ELMEC – EVduty store
I bought the first one in 2018 (installed outside) and the second one in 2021 (installed inside) and never an issue with either one.
They helped me set them up for power sharing and saved me spending untold amounts on running another circuit to the garage.
Good people to work with.
Truth in advertising suggests they be renamed Mustmelt.

Tomorrow could be Redline day for you! 🤞

I think it’s Colonel Mustart hung in the garage by Mr Plum Crappy 🤭
