Just queried the car to see that it was charging (had on a time delay from the EVSE), and the mychevy app said “out of energy” / “out of range”. I know I used 11.9kw to and from work, so I was puzzled . Refreshed the app page and it showed the actual range remaing in the battery. Scared me for a minute , had me wondering if I’d forgotten to shut off the car when I got home.

I've only had my Bolt for 2 weeks but have already observed this "out of energy" message a couple of times and was also puzzled. Each time it seemed to occur after the MyChevrolet app switched from a KeyPass connection to an OnStar connection. Don't know why that should make a difference. I'd also like an explanation of the odd behavior. Fine GM programming???

I can easily imagine the software assuming a default value of "0" if it doesn't get valid information from the car, and then dumbly displaying "out of range" instead of "range information not available". That sort of logic would be pretty typical for coders who don't take the time to put themselves in the mindset of the app users, and sadly that seems to be most coders.

Coders code what they’re told to code.

Like many companies, GM probably follows the general rule for software design: “just start coding, we’ll get the specs to you eventually”.

I’m sure the MyChevrolet app meets the design specification, or will meet it once the design specification is completed.

Also, end users need to manage their expectations. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature!

Yet another reason I do not use any of that crap. If I want to know how much range I have left, I look at the dash display (in the car). I didn't sign up for OnStar. I have only looked at the MyChevrolet app once.

Hey , that's a great idea... I'll walk out to the car in the garage and open the door and NOT see the charging status screen like we used to. So I'll start the car, have the AC come on and wait for the screen to populate just so I can check the SoC. Man, why didn't I think of that? Sorry, I'm being obtuse.... :D I used to love the feature where it showed the charge screen when you just opened the door. Now it seem to do it inconsistently.

I don't have the app so use the "walk out to the car in the garage and open the door" when it's charging so I can see the estimated time of charge completion. At least when it's charging, it almost always seems to show the screen on the DIC. Only recall it not showing once or twice. Surprised I just closed the door and reopened and that seem to bring it to life.

It happens when the KeyPass connection is too weak for reliable communication. The app thinks it is talking to the car and getting reasonable data but actually the connection was too weak for anything usable data to be sent. Thus the battery percentage is read as zero.

And yes, it's poor coding. Possibly really poor, because it ought to know the connection is no good. If the connection was encrypted, I'm 95% sure it'd know, which makes me worry about how well the KeyPass connection is encrypted and/or could be subverted.

If you want to know your battery percentage, looking at the dash display will just give you a bar graph which is hard to read accurately.

(Of course, if you want really accurate battery readings, you don't want the app or the [even worse] website, you need an ODB-II reader.)

Thanks Vertiformed for the info.

So, the tradeoff is that KeyPass can give you data much quicker but it may be way off in accuracy. At least when it is way off you can probably realize that something is amiss. One can always force the OnStar link by turning off Bluetooth and always get accurate results (as long as OnStar is working, which seems to be about 95% of the time).

This is why I'm concerned about the Amazon-GM partnership to allow deliveries to the car trunk via the Keypass function. How long 'til someone here reports that their Bolt was burgled, when it was known to be locked, with no signs of forced entry?

The website has been broken continuously, for six weeks, since they set up a new case for me. I gave up and set up the MyChevy app some weeks ago. I did not set up Keypass, as I couldn't think of when i'd have a use for it. Apparently that was the right decision, as the app works perfectly.
