Hey Bolt drivers!

As the title suggests, this is not another blank infotainment screen post where the hard reset button combo fixes it and I just have to live with it.

Around 4 months ago, our Bolt was having minor issues with the center screen where it would go out occasionally (seemingly random). At no point did the hard reset ever work but eventually the screen would come back on. Throughout all the outages the reverse camera would work but in the distorted miniature version that has been documented extensively. Over the next 4 months it progressively got worse where the screen wouldn’t come on for days and we finally scheduled an appointment with our local dealer. As fate would have it, the screen came back on the day of the appointment and the dealer couldn’t find anything wrong. Two weeks later, same problem and again another trip to the dealer. In an almost comedic way, the screen once again came back on the day of the appointment and now our dealer thought we were insane. Finally last week, the screen had been off for four days and we decided to take it in unannounced so they could see we weren’t crazy. They took the car for a few days and after consulting with GM engineers and troubleshooting everything they could, they decided that a new radio had to be ordered and installed. We just got the car back today and the problem has been fixed, thankfully under warranty.

I just wanted to post this out here since I haven’t seen any post where the hard reset didn’t fix the problem and to let others know to get their Bolts in for service immediately if this ever happens to them.

Car specs: 2019, ~6500mi when issue started, just over 8k when resolved.

From 15 months of ownership, I had the audio go out (meaning it froze) 4x. Two times in the last 2 weeks! The 2 incidents being so close together is getting very annoying.

2020 Bolt LT here; 21,000 miles, same center screen issues as described. Mostly black, reset seldom works or just goes to “Bolt EV” on screen. Fortunately the car still charges to 80%, fan works, no radio and can’t change the temp; AC or heat. Occasionally it comes back on and radio works.

I’ve determined the USB ports are at issue as they no longer connect the phone or charge up the phone.

Anyone know if there is another reboot procedure? Or maybe disconnecting the 12 volt battery for a period of time then reconnecting?
This Bolt is my 9th EV since 3/2011: 3 Nissan Leafs, 2 Chevy Volts, 3 Tesla cars (Model 3, Model S, now a Model Y) plus this 2020 Bolt LT. over 300,000 EV miles plus another 240,000 + miles in gas cars over the same time period of 3/2011 to present. 😉
I still own a gas truck; 2008 Ford F150 that sucks gas @ 8-15mpg that’s used for hauling 950 gallons of water every 7-9 days and Home Depot run.

Dang, how much would a replacement radio cost out of warranty?
guessing $120 if you do it yourself.

Interesting: I just checked the voltage while running. It’s only 11.5 volts. Immediately off and it’s 11 volts.

While charging and car is off it’s 12 volts.

My gas cars show 12.5-13 when off and 13.5-14 when running.

This low voltage must be the issue of the mostly black screen. Today the screen worked for the first errand. Turned the car off. After coming back to do another errand the screen was black again. This time the reset worked.

So you may have 2 problems - the 12V battery itself and the DC-DC inverter that's supposed to charge the 12V battery. At that low voltage, it should trigger the charging system and you should see ~14V.
