I've noticed that on occasion my new Bolt will make a rather loud "crunch" sound when I shut down. I'd almost describe it as brakes grabbing. Sometimes it will do it when I put it in Park, sometimes when I simply just shut it down. The car is not moving when this happens.

Thoughts?

You might wanna recheck that the car isn't moving. This is a known issue from being
put into park while the tires are still moving. If you take off the seat belt while still in Ready
mode, the car will activate the parking brake. It's electric and will make noise when activated.

I'll keep a close eye on my procedure when shutting down. I'll also try the removal of the seat belt prior to shutting down to see how that works.

Thanks,

Rich

I think the admonition was to NOT remove your seatbelt before shutting down, unless your comment meant you would do this as an experiment to see if it produces the same sound. In my 24 months of Bolt EV use, I have only heard these sounds when I did as drdiesel1 suggested, i.e.wheels were still turning.

Excuse me but I think it is something a bit different than just the parking brake engaging. Based on RCC stating there is a "crunching" sound, plus from some other threads I've perused on the topic... it is actually the ABS (Automatic Braking System) engaging. The parking brake makes its own unique sound, sort of an actuator type sound, which anyone driving the car for a day will be familiar with. But a crunching noise -per other iterated threads- is the ABS system kicking in (which I summarize includes engaging the parking brake). It happens if the car has not come to a full stop when powered down. Also happens automatically if you power down on a hill. Does not seem to be a problem at super low speeds... just the car taking "evasive action".

my reading too. You soon learn to bring the car to a stop before actuating the parking brake.

I no longer hear that "crunch" sound, as I put my foot on the brake and hit the "Park" button before shutting down. "Problem" solved!

Rich
To add to this, and I think I came across this recommendation somewhere in the forum previously - foot on brake, engage electronic "handbrake", then hit Park - in that order, practically guarantees zero crunchiness. :D

You will get that sound if the car is not fully stopped, it is the rear brakes setting.

Every now and then I get it especially if I am in a hurry, its the motion of the car and the brake setting you hear.

Nothing to worry about.

I get this sound now and then, parking the car on the crappy gravel / chip seal drive way for my kid's Preschool. They've never compacted it properly. No matter what I do, sometimes the car gently continues to settle or bed down into the gravel and tar hot from the sun, even though I appear to not be moving. This elicits the 'Crunch' sound from the rear in my case.

I get this occasionally when putting the car into park when on a hill. I always engage the parking brake first and keep my foot on the brake until fully in park, so it's not user error. It sounds terrible and no other car I've ever driven has done it. Is this a design flaw? Something unique to the design of the EV transmission?

You might think you're stopped, but, the wheels are not. This has been a known issue for 4 years.
It's operator ERROR, PERIOD!

It may not necessarily be operator error. Yes the vehicle should be stopped before pushing park. It’s a design flaw that is part of the Chevy Bolt park pawl system. Looks great on paper. GM tech here.

Recommended way to exit the vehicle without damaging or stressing any components:
  • Apply foot brakes and come to a full stop
  • Pull parking brake switch
  • Put car in Neutral
  • Release foot brakes to let the car settle
  • Put car in Park
  • Turn off car

this has been theorized previously. but several forum members have convincingly established that it's actually the emergency braking system making the noise.

This is is user error sadly. Never use the parking brake until you come to a complete stop. If not you will hear the crunchiness.
