Before you know it, summer will be here and what better time to drive up the Maine coast? Plan your trip very carefully. Hunt down places to charge and check the kW of the available chargers (woefully few are truly fast chargers).

Earlier this week, I hunted for a hotel or inn or B&B w/courtesy charger so I could plug in overnight to "fill 'er up." I contacted a number of places and all chambers of commerce between Brunswick and Camden (i.e., southern to mid-coast). Every last place replied nicely, sorry no. Except one: the Craignair Inn in the lovely village of Spruce Head. Well, that made my choice easy--I stayed at the Craignair.

Quite a nice place, the Craignair Inn. The location is wonderful and that area is just lovely and pristine. It's a great little Maine village as is its neighbors, Port Clyde and Tenants Harbor.

See photo below. The innkeeper has a BMW EV. He finished up charging, then I plugged in around 8pm and my Bolt was charged at 4am when I went out to photograph the sunrise. All good.

P.S., I wrote an email to the Hospitality Maine organization, a business group for hotels, inns, etc in Maine. I explained the serious lack of lodging with an EV charger and urged them to spread the word to their members. I also explained a concept that I think most non-EV owners aren't familiar with: how slow most public chargers are. For example, if I'm on a road trip and looking for lodging w/charging, it doesn't do me any good to hear a motel owner say "Hey around 5 miles away at the Town Hall parking lot there's a charger." That charger is probably Level 2 and I'm not going to park there and kill time for 5+ hours while my car recharges. I need a place where I can plug in overnight, then walk out in the morning and go. (Ugh, so many Level 2 chargers. What's the point? No one wants to plug in for 4-6 hours so they can refill their battery. What the heck are you going to do for 4-6 hours?)

P.S.#2, please note that I'm talking about hunting for lodging-w-charging between Brunswick and Camden. I didn't check any places in the southern coast (Kittery to Brunswick), nor Down East (north of Camden). So there might well be more lodging establishments with a charger.

P.S. #3, if you're in the Portland area and want a kick-ass fast charger (350 kW), go to the Walmart in Scarborough. I don't know of any other 350kW charger in the state.

Thanks for the INN info.
But I don't think Bolt owners will be looking for a 350KW charger anytime soon. :)
I hear you, but at least when you plug into a 350kW charger, your Bolt recharges relatively fast. I did mine in 35 minutes. By comparison, I've pulled up at a "fast charger," that was painted right on the thing, and it put out 30-something kW. Uh, no, that isn't "fast."

I agree with the OP observation. It is no help to me that the S. Freeport mall or the Boothbay Brewery have L2 chargers. Topside Inn has one charger, but you need a Tesla (Destination) adapter, which I always carry. They are fully booked for months.

@JohnEV I’ll add the Port Inn in Kennebunk has chargers and is a nice affordable place to stay. There are a couple free chargers right in the center of Kennebunk, courtesy of the town, right near lodging too. Also a couple in Kennebunkport at inns right on the coast. PlugShare has them all listed.

Edit: ah I just saw the “PS” that you were talking specifically about Brunswick to Camden. I see a few on PlugShare around Brunswick and several in Camden but not a lot at lodgings in between. I’m still pretty surprised that I’ve been able to find chargers even in small towns and rural areas where EVs are less common. Takes a little extra planning, but I’ve often found ways to find free or convenient L2 charging on overnight road trips without too much hassle.

It would be nice if these places realized that every Tesla comes with a J1772 adapter, but the rest of us have to buy $150 adapter to use a Tesla destination charger. Just put in a J1772 unit!

I have the same problem going to Bar Harbor. There is no shortage of chargers to get there. There are few L2/destination chargers for the return trip to the DCFCs in central and southern Maine.

Tangent: I'm looking to be in Maine in July, is love to have a Bolt to rent, but only see Tesla's on Turo. Not even any if I fly in to Boston and drive up. I know they delisted many for the battery, and now they require owners to do an extra cost inspection of cars over 5 years. Looks like Probably another crappy Sentra again.

My friend has an Air B&B just outside of Acadia. He has a 14-50 outlet which he'd probably let you use if you ask.

He sounds like a nice guy. I can tell you that the Township Committee where I live is terrified that Federal legislation about "right" to have an outdoor EVSE (details unknown to me) may result in an AirBnB-like industry of "Charge In My Driveway Businesses", that would be inappropriate for ritzy suburbs (that already forbid short-term house rentals.)
