Hi all, I have to park in my driveway and have no garage or car port. The car is out in the weather, California, but we gets lots of rain here. I was looking for recommendations for how to install a level 2 "charger" EVSE in this scenario. Will I need a box of some sort to cover the charging cable? Will I need anything special for the install? I think my dryer is 220v with a pair of 30 amp breakers in tandem. I was planning on a transfer switch so only the charger or the dryer can be used at one time. Thanks for your insight and advice.

I assume you're looking for a weather proof EVSE. I suggest looking at JuiceBox and ClipperCreek. I believe both of these are rated for outdoor use. You can take a look at their websites for more info and/or call them and ask for recommendations. I would consider hardwiring the EVSE instead of using a weather proof plugin, but I'm conservative like that.

Hardwiring an outdoor charge station is typically a requirement in many areas.

Most EVSEs are outdoor rated. Is the Bolt supplied one outdoor rated?

I charge my Prius with the supplied EVSE out in Oregon rain, and even removed the O-ring because it doesn't fit right.

As long as water isn't getting inside the EVSE box, there shouldn't be any problems.

Electrical code now requires outdoor outlets to be covered. Something like this would be good:

OK, a car port, but still pretty exposed. The outlet is "weather-proof." The gray "box" is a garden hose holder, which I've repurposed as my EV charger holder. Been working fine since late April.

Just remember to put a small drain hole on the bottom somewhere in case water does get in somehow so it can't fill up with water. (I like the one with the clear / smoked lid.)
