Dude, that was like 5 years ago.

Yet here we are today with GM taking reservations for base Silverados at $39,900. I asked my local Chevrolet GM when one might be delivered. He said, "With reservations on the $106,695 RST First Edition still coming in strong, don't take a deep breath and hold it waiting for a base model. I don't let my commercial customers place orders, as I don't expect to see any base trucks before 2025 at the earliest. By then, the price will be considerably higher."

Reservation does not guarantee vehicle delivery within any certain time. Final price is determined by dealer.

We've beaten this horse unmercifully, but what actually happens is if one orders a base model, Tesla just doesn't build or deliver it and the would-be buyer either steps up to the more expensive model or steps aside. Had friends and family members who went through that Model 3 debacle for two years.

GM and Ford are not Tesla, but I'd wager those who order the vaporware $40,000 work truck will be waiting as long as the $35,000 Model 3 buyers waited.

Yup, with Tesla the reservation just gets you head of the line for option to purchase... if you want the lower trim car you had to wait for darn near forever to actually get it. They got a lot of complaints over this and didn't seem to do it with the Model Y... but they seem to be doing it with the cybertruck, so I am confused as to weather or not they learned a lesson? Ford and Chevy already have a history of zero options work truck versions of their vehicles, so I think they are much more likely to deliver fairly early on the work trucks... but the quoted price will only be if you "buy in bulk".

I'm still leaning towards "no" btw. Ford pulls out, Amazon getting trucks from Stellantis, this price hike clearly manipulating the IPO. Apparently nearly all the vehicles delivered so far have been to employees and they raised the price specifically as they shifted to delivering to customers. A VP in sales filed a suit in open court stating that Rivian knew the entire time the prices were unrealistic and that this hike was necessary all along but proceeded anyway specifically for the IPO.

Once again, I feel I need to point out that the company is still lying. I'm not sure they have the choice if almost any of the above is true but 30% increased in costs is not what auto manufacturers are experiencing and the price of most components of battery packs has actually cratered over the past 20 years.

I'm fine with buying products from rotten companies, we all do it every day but these guys might wind up being pirates in the end.

The problem for Rivian is the F-150 Lightning and the Chevy Silverado EV. When it was a choice between the butt ugly Cybertruck, or the relatively normal looking Rivian (both of which will be expensive, with a token number of software limited Cybertrucks sold at the low promised price), the choice for most American's that could afford a $70K+ EV truck would have been the Rivian. But now with the F-150 Lightning and Chevy Silverado EV (both look normal, and both will sell for thousands of dollars less in base trim) I don't see much future for Rivian. The "I am so cool, look at me in my Eco friendly truck" people will get the Cybertruck... regular people will be drawn to the Ford and Chevy. Rivian will be left out in the cold.

Sounds like the best hope for Rivian (if they don't pull some hail mary turnaround) is to be bought out by one of the other major players (and we can already cross Ford and GM off the list. I guess Stellantis or one of the Japanese bigs would make the most sense. I see Tesla buying out Rivian a possibility too.

Why are we crossing Ford and Chevy off the list? I would think any of the big companies that make big American trucks, namely Ford, Chevrolet, Stellantis and Toyota (and perhaps Nissan) remain extremely interested in the future of Rivian. Who knows why Ford and Amazon walked, perhaps they peered under the financials and didn't like what they saw or understood the logistics and manufacturing issues they were going to encounter meaning delays in deliveries for their fleets or bottom line (depending on the interest), regardless I don't think it instantly makes this only palatable to more creative purchases.

In fact, in a Little Finger kind of way this creates opportunities for snatching up because it's just chaos right now. The right person sees the right amount of stability in interest and assets and a $40 / share Rivian could be just what the doctor ordered to say, save your failing BEV light truck that you whiffed with in the coming years.

Don't know much about the leadership team at Rivian but not impressed. CEOs are paid big money to lead - yes lead. Make decisions and handle crisis situations. Even better than handing a crisis is avoid one. How do you let someone pull something like the failed price hike? Even bigger problem is if it was planned before the IPO! Elon is far from perfect but does have a way of handling crisis and even better avoiding them. He certainly leads Tesla, I laugh every time he gets in a tiff with the SEC or someone else over a Tweet. New companies need executive teams that are smart, capable, cleaver and have integrity particularly integrity with the buyers and potential purchasers. The price hike was dumb or dumb and arrogant. Response was proper but everyone knows how to do that nowadays. Still think they are going to flop. Lots of executive team want to be's out that that are very impressed with themselves and know the buzzwords but are failures.
