So my seat back broke. I was seated and arched my back to get my phone out of my pocket and crack!!

$51 and 2 weeks later, my new seat back arrived from GM Parts center.net.

It’s actually simple to swap this part out. The only thing was peeling the foam and heated seat element from the old part. The new part has been updated as the plastic is now textured whereas the old part is smooth. Hopefully it’s also stronger.

Here are some pics.

Why did a defective part and/or design cost you *anything* to fix?

Because I’m way beyond the bumper to bumper warranty and the dealer wants $400 to diagnose the problem. So if it’s determined that there was no material defect, then I’m on the hook for $400.

Ah, got it. $51 isn't ridiculous, and $400 will probably buy a significant amount of your time. I'm finally getting used to the idea of spending time on a project, rather than money, and I've been retired almost five years. I find tinkering to be cathartic.

I understand the dealership’s point of view and business model.

But I’m not paying $400 for them to look at my seat.

The whole process too about an hour as I had already taken it apart to bandaid it while waiting for my part to ship.

I drilled holes and zip tied it.
