Having been hit, years ago, head on at speed I can tell you that the ONLY thing that really matters is that you are OK. Although it's sad, cars can be fixed or replaced - you cant. Glad to hear all parties are uninjured.

I'm interested to know if the battery is damaged and how expensive the repair is compared to an ICE with similar damage.

Looks like the other guy got his money's worth out of the crumple zones.

Glad everyone is ok.

Yeah, really glad we're both ok. We had a good chat while waiting for police and tow trucks. It was the other drivers first day at a new gig after moving here from out of state. They may have just glanced at their mapping app at the wrong moment. I played back the dashcam footage and you can hear the briefest squeal of their tires before impact. I was creeping along in traffic waiting to turn right and I'm pretty sure that had the cars in front been fully stopped that I'd have tapped the car in front of me.

The Bolt didn't look that bad, but damage can be well hidden. The local Chevy dealer has a collision center and it was supposed to be towed there yesterday (they also have an EV specialist. Haven't heard back yet. I didn't try the hatch, but all the other doors opened normally. No airbags in the Bolt deployed - which seems right to me. While it looked drivable (at least to move it out of traffic) the Bolt went into the "Conditions unsafe for shift" mode.

Shockingly, the front doors of the Nissan barely opened - while the door latches released, the hinges jammed. I think the sheet metal from the fenders was shoved back into the hinge area. Their airbag deployed and probably prevented injury.

I wonder if you weighed 1000# more than him. That's a Versa not a Leaf right? You're about 3500#, he's about 2500# so you weigh 40% more. You win by physics typically.

I see the gas door now, and bits of the engine thingy

Yeah, as you noted, they were in a Versa so I was the heavier vehicle. But this was on city streets, not an Interstate. We were both moving the same direction - although I was just creeping along. I'm not an expert, but based on typical traffic patterns on that road I would guess the speed differential at impact was about 30 or maybe 40 MPH. Their car wasn't that old (~10 years old) and was rated good or acceptable in various IIHS frontal crash tests. I would have expected better results.
