I was driving home this afternoon doing exactly the speed limit - 70, with the cruise control on - down the highway. Had plenty of charge left, so I wasn't worried about efficiency, but state troopers are notorious for setting up along that particular stretch of road, so obeying the traffic laws to a T is quite desirable there. Of course, I had several vehicles traveling at higher speeds pass me in the lane to my left, but I didn't think too much of it. Then, I noticed in my side mirror that from behind the car some distance behind me, an older white Chevy pickup jerked into the left lane and sped up. As he passed by me, a stream of thick black smoke poured from his exhaust pipe, conveniently pointed my direction. It was clearly deliberately aimed at me - not to mention he was peering around behind his seat at me as he sped off. He wasn't even worth acknowledging or reacting to.

Not even mad, just wanted to share the story with y'all. Might try to pull the card from my dash cam and see if I caught it, though.

Edit: Apologies if this wasn't posted in the right place.

The right lane is for cruising. The left for passing. Sounds like he passed you in the correct lane.

As for speeding? How many of obey all the traffic laws all the time?

Blowing smoke at you? Most vehicles do have the exhaust pointing out the passenger side of the vehicle unless they are more performance oriented and then they usually have more than one exhaust pipe sticking straight out the back.

Do you believe the driver knew you were in an electric vehicle? Why would the driver of an old Chevy PU have reason to antagonize you?

Way too often we thing the actions of others are on purpose and directed at us when most of the time their mind is somewhere else and they just did something not so smart. If he was messing with you then he might have cut over way to close to you and then tapped the brakes.

If someone is passing me I prefer it when they get over and just maintain that higher rate of speed on down the road, putting more distance between them and me.

Came home from C'ville the other day, on the interstate. I was running 3 mph over the limit, on CC, in the right lane. I came up on two semis running at the legal limit...one in each lane. I have seen them trying to pass each other before, but this was different. The one in the left lane stayed there for miles. I was fine with staying well back in the right lane on CC. Of course, people started flying by in the left lane. Several ended up pulling into the right lane ahead of me. Then an SUV came up behind the semi in the left lane.

Finally, up came an angry brodozer...one of those hugely jacked up diesel trucks that looks like a timberjack. He climbed right up on the SUV, several feet off their rear bumper. The huge knobbies make an incredible racket. But just for good measure, he rode with the left tires on the rumble strip. Every now and then he would belch black smoke out of his stovepipe stacks. This went on for several minutes, until the SUV driver signaled to get into the right lane, and literally forced his way between the cars in the right lane.

I was getting off the interstate at this point, so I didn't get to see what the brodozer sociopath was planning to do to the semi.

Back in the 55mph era, a Dallas radio station put a group of cars together on the DFW tollway. All the cars drove exactly 55 and stayed abreast so as to block all the lanes. The entire length of the tollway was bumper to bumper at 55! Absolute chaos ensued with one car actually flipping over while trying to pass in the ditch. Its a wonder no one was shot.

Do you know what "rolling coal" is?

Diesel engines don't precisely meter the air/fuel ratio like gasoline engines, as they attempt to always have more than enough air to completely combust the fuel. Coal rolling occurs when people tune their engines to deliver more fuel than there is available air to burn it. It also occurs when a turbo is broken (less air), but that's hardly ever the case. I can get a tiny amount of soot from my exhaust if I hit the accelerator hard and the turbo hasn't spooled up yet (turbo lag).

I remember that stunt.
Speaking of coal rolling, China added, net, enough coal fired electrical generation last year to burn 10,000 tons/hr.

Do you get soot out of the exhaust with an operative DPF? I think that it takes more than tuning to roll coal, you also need a non-DPF truck or have to tamper (remove) the DPF. (Owner of a MB Sprinter diesel based vehicle, besides the Bolt and other assorted vehicles)

Sounds like coal rolling to me. Now if it said "Prius Repellent" on the tailgate you would be sure. I drove Priuses before going electric and it always amazes me that some people with small minds just go bonkers at the sight of a hybrid or electric car.

My truck is 1998.

I'd probably eliminate the DPF and urea injection in a newer truck, but only because I want higher efficiency and there's no pollution problems where I live. In a polluted city I'd surely keep those systems, but then I probably wouldn't own a truck then.

On some routes I drive, there are some known locations where highway patrol frequently sets up. Approaching those locations, it would not be a good idea to drive faster than the speed limit or do any other obnoxious driving that attracts highway patrol attention. But it seems that there are many drivers who do not realize that. In one case, I saw someone trying to drive much faster than the flow of traffic and clearly above the speed limit, while weaving around traffic and tailgating... and the highway patrol that was there took off after them and made a traffic stop.

I had a VW diesel with a mass airflow sensor that the ECU presumably used to avoid injecting more fuel than the amount of air flowing in can combust. When it failed, it did not light the check-engine light, but resulted in much lower power and slower acceleration -- presumably, it was just sending incorrect data to the ECU.

Actually with our instant torque Bolts, zipping around a lane blocker is usually accomplished in utter silence, thus not irritating anyone.
Even with an ICE, the respectful method of overtaking, is to accelerate then back off when parallel. This normally does not enrage the overtaken driver.
So I agree with the OP that road rage was probably intended by spewing a carbon cloud under full acceleration through the full pass.
Let's face it, generally speaking, that fulfills the M-O of the lifted truck community mindset. Not all of course but the pattern is there
Here in the South anyway.

Vehicles visibly polluting is a ticketable offense in many jurisdictions, so it probably just needs to be enforced more.

There was a truck burning so much oil on a recent trip at night that it was difficult to see, and even after he had gone 2 miles ahead, I was still in a cloud of his smoke. Clearly a vehicle that needs to be repaired before being allowed on the road.
