Tesla has signed a long-term partnership with leading lithium-ion battery researcher Jeff Dahn. Dahn is a professor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada. Dahn will begin a five-year collaboration with Tesla beginning June 2016, according the Fortune.
Dahn and his team of 20 graduate students, post-docs and other staff will be tasked with making improvements and refinements to existing lithium-ion technologies. Specifically the team will be aiming to reduce per-kWh costs by increasing energy density and recharge cycles.
This news comes at the same time as Tesla builds its Gigafactory. That large factory is aiming to reduce battery costs by 30 percent or more. This is seen as necessary for Tesla to build its mass-market Model 3 sedan while keeping its 250-mile range and $35,000 price target.
