For two years now I have had issues with the touch screen not working but always fixed with some number of forced reboots. Would happen regularly for months then go away completely for months. Now the screen is completely hosed. Stuck at the keep your eyes on the road splash screen and no number of reboots will return it to normal operation. Anyone else get to this point and have any suggestions? Going to dealer for recall SW update on Friday and we’ll see what they have to say.

While it is conceivable there is an issue with your unit, I find engaging the gears too quickly, before everything fully initializes was the factor in the one time my infotainment screen froze. I intentionally allow time for all of the diagnostic icons to clear before putting it in gear, just a routine now.

Probably need to take it to the dealer as you are..
Just a thought (probably not it), but you could try removing the ground cable on the 12v car battery for a while to clear all the memory in the unit... (and lose all your settings)...
Not saying that would help, but ????

Good luck..

We have a 2017 Bolt, bought a year ago in Vancouver, and the infotaimment unit started to become unresponsive to touch once in a while. It has become worse and now it is always unresponsive unless it is reset. Then it becomes unresponsive again when turning off the car. I called GM and they say they need to run diagnostics (at my cost) to figure out what it is. We love the car, but that plus the whole battery issue is starting to be a bit much. I would be quite disapointed if we had to change the infotainment unit when it is only 4 years old. The car has only 50,000 km and it is great oterwise.

When I talked to GM about this, I asked them what where the typical root causes of such problems, but they could not tell me anything, apart from the fact that they have to run diagnostics. I would be curious to know what other Bolt owners with a similar problem had to do to get it fixed. Is it a replacement unit, a bad connector, a corrupted memory?

When you say "reset" I'm assuming you're holding down the Home and Fast Forward buttons to reset the infotainment system. If you're willing to have some of your vehicle settings reset, it might be worth disconnecting the 12V battery for several seconds to reset the main vehicle computer.

Yes, reset is through the Home and Fast Forward button. I also tried to reset the settings and also to disconnect the battery, but that did not fix anything.
have you tried the factory reset option?

And again, as @shrox suggested, if your touch screen is unresponsive and the factory protective plastic sheet is still installed on it, then this would probably be a good time to remove it to see if that makes a difference.

I still have the plastic screen installed on my 2017 Bolt and am not having any issues with it, other than it sometimes seems to need a longer touch than I think it should. But I'm never sure if that's due to the touch screen or due to buggy or poorly performing Android Auto. I'll leave it on for now, but if the touch screen every stops working then off it comes.

I have removed the plastic screen a few months ago, so that is not the issue, but thanks for the tip. I brought the car to the dealer for diagnostics and 200$ (CDN) later, I was told that the screen needs to be replaced and maybe the radio too. Cost: between $2500 and $3000. Needless say I am not a happy camper. and contacted GM to see what they can do. The car is out of warranty being a 2017 model, but it is unacceptable that a piece like this would fail so quickly given the cost to repair. So far GM has said that because the car is out of warranty, they won't cover it. However, given the inconvenience related to teh battery fisaco I am trying to get them to help cover the cost. This is my frst american car (always had hondas and toyotas before), and if they don' t fix this, it will be the last one. And I will not recommend it to people. Too bad, because I really like the car otherwise. I am still hopeful that GM will do something because there is no way I am going to spend $3000 on this. Also, it seems strange that the entire unit needs replacement when it works after a reset (so far at least), even though it needs to be reset each time the car is started.

Thanks for the link. I guess that will be my back-up plan if GM refuses to cover the replacement.

Well, since GM did not want to foot the bill, I ended up getting a replacement unit from ebay. With shipping and taxes it cost about $200 CDN, add 20$ in tools to remove the dash. It took me about 2h30min to do the replacement, as this dash is a real pain to remove. I could not find a way to access the screw on the right (as per the video and service manual), but it is actually possible to do the swap without removing that screw. The replacement unit is for the 2019 Bolt but it works perferctly on my 2017. I am quite disapointed with the fact that such an expensive part to replace at the dealer would fail so quickly though. Hopefully the new unit will last longer.

My 2021 Bolt touchscreen had many problems early on, and the dealer replaced the radio unit after diagnosing it as the cause. (the problems had nothing to do with the radio functioning). Then things were better, though sometimes the display would just switch to a black background on its own, without being touched. As the weather got colder and i started using the A/C, the radio would come on every time I either turn the A/C on or change any setting. I took it to the dealer. The very nice tech person who said he has all the EV training offered by Chevy, looked into it. 30 minutes later he came and told me that apparently that's the way the touch screen is wired, and there was nothing to fix! What a pain. The radio also comes back on after I shut the car off, and doesn't turn off again until I exit the car and close the door. Who planned that? The radio settings require one to take one's eyes off the road to make any changes. Why does the radio have to be controlled by a touch screen? It is not safer. AND, that big message that comes on to tell you to be careful about taking your eyes off the road to manage the touchscreen, that you have to look at the touchscreen to touch in the right place to make it disappear - has anyone figured out how to turn that message off? I don't need to be told every time I drive my car. Once, when I started driving the car, was enough.
I do love my Bolt, but have grown to hate the way the touchscreen is configured. I've read of problems the rest of you have had with your touchscreens - Chevy, please listen! Stop trying to make the touchscreen do everything! I would love to have regular, old knobs and buttons to manage the radio with. My previous cars had them, and still managed the blue tooth pairing to interact with my phone/ipod.

You can flip to the next/previous radio station using the "Fav >" and "Fav <" buttons on the steering wheel without taking your eyes off the road.

I never use the radio, all the audio I listen to comes via Android Auto. So I have the infotainment system's source set to "Sirius XM" (which I don't have a subscription to) channel 0. That way it never tries to play anything.

Join the club. Have had touch screen and infotainment system lock ups on and off for a couple years. Never able to correlate it to any one thing. Just more great GM software. Same software engineers that bricked my Bolt.
Mine is doing that now. It can be reset by holding the double arrow and home buttons down for about 10 seconds. Bolt is 5 in about 20 days, is that under warranty now?
