Hi all - My husband bought a used 2017 Chevy Bolt the other day and when we picked it up today, we asked them to have it fully charged. I got in and the GOM (Guess-o-meter) said 78 miles. We kinda freaked out. When he bought it, they told him that it wasn’t fully charged and that number would go up after they charged it.
I’ve been reading a lot in this forum about how that number can change and varies, but 78 seems VERY VERY low in comparison to what the norm seems to be for a fully charged Bolt. Were we sold a lemon?
My dear husband smooshed our Nissan Leaf and this was the replacement he bought us...I was looking forward to the increased range, but now I’m having SERIOUSLY bad feelings that we made a bad choice.

What can we do to see the real range of this vehicle? What can we do to see that number increase before we go back to this dealer and rip them a new one? (And you just may be saving my husband’s life, because I might run him over with this new used car if the range doesn’t go up.)
Signed, - Upset Wife

Hypermile for a few days, avoid HVAC use if possible, and charge to full, it should go up to respectable numbers. It takes time to adjust, if it was sitting on the lot with people looking at it with heater running and low miles, the efficiency would plummet and with it the GOM.

Welcome to the forum. That does seem to indicate that the battery has some issues if it was fully charged. But you may have hit the jackpot. The battery warranty is 8 years / 100,000 miles.

Keep in mind, there was a recent recall where the "repair" was to reduce your battery capacity by 5%, so your range will be affected by that. I agree with previous posts here, drive it a significant distance every day for a week or so, charging it to full each night and see what the GOM says... if it still looks hinky invest in a bluetooth OBDII dongle and get torque pro and use that to check the battery capacity.

And if you DID get a used car with a bad battery, it is still covered under the battery warranty.

If it was fully charged then all 20 of the green bars on the left side of the Driver Information Console will be lit up. If they are, you may have an issue. If they aren't, the issue is with your dealer because he didn't fully charge the vehicle.

Charge levels you should see in the dash display when "full" (percentages can be seen in the myChevrolet app or through OBD-II with the appropriate PIDs):

  • 20 bars (100%) if fully charged and temporary recall software change is not done.
  • 18 bars (87-88%) if charged to Hilltop Reserve (which is only available if the temporary recall software change is not done).
  • 19 bars (94-95%) if fully charged to the limit imposed by the temporary recall software change.

If the car has not had the temporary recall software change done, it is advised to turn on Hilltop Reserve.
