Getting cold here in the midwest and my Bolt shares my shop area. I really don't like heating the garage/shop with kerosene or LP do to the stink and risk of fire. This might be a dumb idea but has anyone tried to heat an area like this by turning on the Bolt, setting the heat to high and rolling down the windows? My garage/shop does have an 8 foot insulated ceiling to help hold the heat in.

The Bolt's heater puts out 7500 watts on high. It pulls that power from the battery, which must be replaced by the onboard charger pulling power from the wall. Do you really want to put that kind of continuous strain on your Bolt's charger/battery/heater?

I've done it. I just keep the car plugged and it's roughly battery neutral. Even with the heat on high Torque Pro tells me that the heater power will drop below the 7.5kW. It works pretty well. Some kind of circulation fan would probably help.

My Bolt's heater is the worst of any car I've had and feels like it can barely warm the cabin. I can't imagine trying to warm a room with it, let alone having it burn out from misuse and end up with a $1500 repair bill. I'd get one of those tall radiant heaters from Costco with the parabolic reflector to shoot the heat where I need it.

I use a heat lamp at my desk (at home) since that's where I spend 9 hrs of the workday. Then I turn down the house temp so I'm not heating the entire space when I'm the only one home. That doesn't answer the question, but my point is to think about heating only the specific area needed.

Install a few 150W bulbs in your garage. It will keep your garage warmer and also make your garage so bright that rats would not come out. With EV's, we have to be even more careful with rodents.

Heating the entire air space in a garage is incredibly inefficient. It takes forever to work out the coldsoak. Then you pick up a tool.... zikes! The damned thing is freezing.
For only a few $ you can buy a couple of 150-300W infra red lamp bulbs,(often called brooder lamps), used for keeping chicks warm.
Much like being outside on a cold but sunny day, your shop can be quite cool, but the radiant heat keeps everything it touches warm. Several of the outdoor hot spring pools out West use them to keep the walkways warm between change rooms & pool.
I use a couple to keep the granite floors warm between bathroom & sauna.
The best heat, though costing more) is an overhead radiant heater. They keep everything, including the concrete floor comfortable enough to work in shirtsleeves. The cost for natural gas to run them is a few dollars a month.
Every ice rink here uses them to heat the stands, you can watch the game sans coat.
