I just purchased a 2022 Bolt 2LT (w/ adaptive cruise control which I believe requires all the option packages). I am new to this forum which has been very useful so far. I searched for any posts on the issue that I am having, and not finding any, decided to create my own.

In short, the car can't detect any voice commands (using the button on the steering wheel that is a cartoon of someone talking). The microphone works with Onstar and phone calls, but not with the vehicle voice commands (which don't require a connected phone). For example, I do a single press and release of the "talking face" button on the steering wheel and get the audio prompt to issue a voice command like "Tune the radio to 99.5 FM." No matter what I say, even if I exactly mimic one of the listed examples, the system verbally responds: "I didn't hear anything" (or something like that). In the case of trying to use Siri on my iPhone, I press and hold the talking face button on the steering wheel for ~3 seconds which does successfully activate Siri on my iPhone (which is connected to CarPlay via Bluetooth). However, Siri also can't detect anything I say (confirmed by the Siri animating icon which would pulse if it detected any audio when I was talking).

Oddly, Onstar works fine. I demoed it at the dealership when I picked up the car and the Onstar representative could hear me ok. Also, I am able to place calls with my phone connected via CarPlay and the microphone works. I even put the phone up on the roof and closed the door to make sure it wasn't using the phone's microphone. I left myself messages (to a different phone line) and couldn't tell a difference between having the phone in the car or outside on the roof.

So clearly there is at least one microphone in the car that is working and operates correctly for Onstar and making phone calls via CarPlay. But it doesn't work for the Bolt's built-in voice commands or when trying to send audio commands to Siri to a CarPlay-connected iPhone. Is there an additional microphone associated with that "talking face" button vs. Onstar or placing phone calls through a CarPlay connected phone? That seems less likely but then the next likely culprit would be a software issue and I would assume others would be complaining about this same issue. I talked to GM customer support for connectivity services in case it was just a setting issue but they couldn't resolve it and suggested I take it back to the dealer for service to look at it.

Anyone seen anything like this or have a suggestion? Feels like the sort of thing that will be a boondoggle if I have to take it back to the dealer, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Josh

Let me ask this a different way, does anyone with a 2022 Bolt EV use the voice recognition functionality that is built into the infotainment system? For example, a single press of the push to talk button on the steering wheel and a command like “switch to FM?”

My dealer eventually diagnosed this as a bad radio module. Took a while to get the part but the replacement was fully covered by the warranty. Now voice recognition works for both the built in voice commands and the CarPlay connection to Siri.

Can you use voice recognition to interface with the navigation system? When I ouch my button it’s only phone and audio commands available. I have premium on start service. I place a support call but no response from chevy and the manual is not helpful here. Any thoughts welcome

Once I got the module fixed, I was able to access the car's native voice command system by doing a short press of the "talking face" button on the steering wheel. But as you said, I've only been able to get radio and and phone commands that way. If I long press the "talking face" button, I can access Siri and Apple CarPlay and say things like "Navigate to Work using Waze." That's what I use for navigation. I recall playing around with the Onstar navigation and that does accept voice commands if I remember correctly (my trial of Onstar has expired so I can't reconfirm) but gives only voice directions (I could never get it to work with the Chevy map app and not sure it's supposed to). YMMV, for example if you have Super Cruise. I don't have that so I'm not sure if there are additional features enabled in that case. But yeah, what you are describing sounds similar to the functionality I have once my radio module was replaced. Before that, I couldn't access CarPlay or even radio/phone voice commands at all. Hope that helps.

Thx for the reply…. I have subsequently found out that Chevy Maps doesn't support navigation voice command from the native system. Another reason not to spend the bucks on OnStar. The My Chevrolet app is also just about useless. It seems to have almost constant connection issues and the functionality it offers in comparison to our Tesla app should be a source of great embarrassment for GM. Beyond that we love the car. Huge value vs. the cost.
