So officially (as official as this record can be), the record time for an EV crossing the entire state of Maryland (Oakland to Ocean City) is 6 hours, 41 minutes. It was done by a Tesla Model S 70D owner observing the posted speed limits. FWIW Google maps says the drive should take 5 hours, 23 minutes with no traffic. If you figure a sane person would take a 30 minute break for lunch during the trip, a regular gas car should take about 6 hours to travel across the state.

I’ve decided that I’m going to attempt to break the current record in June (I will be a bachelor for about 2 weeks in June so I’ll have extra time). I figure I should be able to break the 6:41 mark without much issue, as even with a 30 minute stop for a quick charge (if necessary) I should be able to still make the trip in about 6 hours….definitely less than 6:41.

The real question is if I can make the trip on a single charge. The elevation profile of the trip is in my favor (goes from 2,900 feet in Western MD to sea level in Ocean City), and the last 1/3 of the trip are mostly on roads that have 55 mph or less speed limits.

Should be interesting to say the least. :D

On a single charge? How far is it from Oakland to Ocean City?
321.6 according to Google Maps.

Maybe the better question is how best to charge up full once in Western MD. There is literally only 1 L2 station anywhere near Oakland, and it's at an inn that has a couple of Tesla destination chargers.

Oh wow, I just checked plugshare to see if there's at least a private station you can try charging at in Oakland and there's nothing. You may have to start your journey somewhere else in Western MD.

So... it appears it is possible. But reading the end of his blog post, he does state that it is not going to possible to make that trip back on a single charge due to the elevation. So that's something to keep in mind.

I think you would want to start with a hill top charge since all the elevation drop is at the beginning of you trip. It a long steady down hill from Keysers Ridge to Cumberland. Then a couple bumps around Frederick and pretty flat for the next 200 miles to OC. According to Plugshare there is CCS charging in Hagerstown right off I-70 at the Outlet Mall if the first part of the trip doesn't net you what you hope.

Good luck in your endevour, just don't let the racetrack that is I-70 suck you into wasting your hyper-mileing.
