Just a thought, what happens to the used batteries from electric cars? At some point, EV owners may change them out for a fresh one so what happens to the old ones?

Likely not much different than regular car starting batteries, so like mentioned above, recycle. I'm sure if you check with the local metal recycling companies they might give some insight on what happens exactly. Often it's recycled, packaged and sold back to car companies to make what ever they plan to make.

Doing online research on large format lithium battery pack recycling. Right now their are only two companies that are doing anything and it is only in the trial stages. Apparently there isn't an economical way to recycle these packs with such a small amount so there is a lot of experimenting with second uses. I believe Nissan and BMW have experimental programs to repurpose packs in homes. Some analysis says by 2035 there may be as many as 6 million used packs but even then it will still not be economical to recycle. This is another reason for caution by the auto companies. It looks like there may be future legislation or regulation to mandate how the used packs are disposed/recycled/reused. A US company Retriev has a patented process to freeze the packs that still carry a charge with liquid nitrogen and then crush the packs to recycle the metals. In Europe a Belgian company heats them to very high temperatures and the metals are recycled and the slag goes into cement. In summary no definitive answer but still a work in progress.

Home battery pack seems like a reasonable way to re-purpose old EV batteries but even those will run out of charge later on. Guess that area of electric cars will advance at an exponential rate once the Bolt and Model 3 is out and about.

Well, we were talking about home battery packs like the one large wall mounted one Tesla offers. Old batteries that still has charge but not enough for a car can be used in those.
