The driver can reach behind the front passenger's seat to grab a map from the map pocket. A map pocket behind the driver's seat would not be easily accessible to the driver.

I dont understand. All my maps are on my phone. Why would i put my phone there?
Just kidding of course, but something i can picture my teenage daughter saying.
All my seat backs seem to be stuffed full with reusable grocery bags nowadays.

I suspect OPs kids raised this with a whiny "what does he/she get a pocket and I don't".
Honestly, I don't think I have ever used the map pocket, going on 5 years. So I suspect GM engineers overestimated the need?

I store my windshield sunshade in the map pocket. When it is folded up it fits perfectly. Easy to reach back to grab it or put it away.
As others have said, that pocket is for the driver. I store my vehicle "brick" in there, which is a metal clipboard with my insurance, registration, and some laminated placards with checklists or information on them.
I think they eliminated the map pocket on later years? My wife has every Virginia county map back there. She moved them from her 2006 Corolla, when we got the Bolt. I don't know if the state even sells county maps anymore. If we are ever out of cell coverage, she is ready.

Same here. Plus I have a clip-on tissue case that I clip onto the top edge of the pocket. No tissue box sliding around the back seat that I have to stop to reach.
They might if they force you to reuse your old plastic straws!

I used to carry paper maps, threw them out years ago. Reason I brought this up was because I had 2 passengers the other day, the one behind me was looking for a place to put her things.
