I hate glasses with a passion. When my arms got too short years ago, I went to monovision. One eye for far and one for near. The Bolt's mirror/screen works perfect as my near eye doesn't have to do anything special to see it and my far eye ignores it naturally.
Never heard of that before, learn something every day.
At first, monovision was one contact lens focused for distance and one for close. Nowadays, those with cataract surgery lens replacement can choose that option for their new eyeballs.

My wife got lasik eye surgery where she selected monovision. Following her lead, I discovered that all I had to do was remove one of my contacts. I just have to remember to put the contact back in when I go to play tennis. If I forget, that first ball coming at me is a rude reminder.

On my EUV, the backup camera is just above the license plate, but the camera for the rear view mirror is above the window, directly below the third brake light.

I tried that trick for a couple of years. It made working on a computer screen easier, as I usually didn't need my reading glasses. The dash in the car was clearer as well. But I tired of the two eyes working against each other and went back to the correct lens for each eye. I haven't reached to point of needing cataract surgery yet, so still have to deal with using readers. My eye doctor did say that when I do need surgery, the replacement lens will be pliable enough again that my eye muscles should be able to adjust for near distance and using readers should no longer be necessary.

And i find the rearview mirror camera stays pretty clean as compared to the backup camera....in salty slush that is.

I finally broke down and tried progressives and that was the ticket. I hold a commercial coach/bus license and both eyes have to function in all scenarios.
It takes some practice getting the head tilt correct but unlike bifocals, there isn't a cutoff line just a gradual fade of one prescription into the other.

Has anyone tried vortex generators to help with the rear hatch crud collection? We may not go fast enough for it to be effective but worth a shot.

Not even close to the worst. Most of my cars have been hatchbacks, wagons, or vans. Sedans don’t tent to have the same aerodynamic issues, which is why they don’t have rear window wipers. I had more issues with my Golf, Scion xD, and Isuzu Trooper for sure.

I have a cheaper solution: I carry Windex and paper towels in the car.

I am not sure I understand, you have a wiper in the back. Imagine the Ioniq 5 😑
My rear window gets so much grit that running the rear wiper worries me that it will scratch the glass as it takes a while for the washer to wet the bade. Had VW golfs same issue. Our Outback rear window gets filthy too.

The back window definitely collects muck (wiper/washer works well and sees a lot of use), but no worse than many other vehicles I’ve owned/driven. The most recent light to moderate freezing rain and snow in the N Illinois area with poorly plowed, slushy, over salted road conditions, however, resulted in the absolute worst build-up of fine dirt and salt over the front and lower sides of my Bolt than any driving condition I’ve ever seen. About half the trip was on snow-covered surfaces. The car was washed within a week beforehand and it looked like it was driven through off-road mud after the 120 mile drive. I still don’t know what the heck was going on…and the mileage took an unexpectedly big hit in those conditions. This is the third winter driving a Bolt.

Interesting. Is there a squirter for the backup cam? The nice thing about the older Bolts is that the one squirter cleans both cameras, although I can see why the higher point of view might make sense for the mirror camera.
Based on his pics, I'm guessing no squirter for the backup cam. I just checked, and our 2021 LT has no squirter for the backup cam either. It looks like it's only for the rear view mirror cam, on all Bolts of all years, so equipped.

It is nice indeed for you 2017-2021 Premier owners that the squirter is able to do double duty.

Obviously, many here have made the effort to become comfortable with the rear camera view in the mirror. We tried it, didn't like it and haven't used it. Maybe it is time to give it an extended trial before ignoring it another five years.

We depend on the rear camera in parking lots and ours gets unusably dirty to the point we keep a cloth under the driver's seat to wipe the lens after every trip on winter roads.

The 2017 Premiere has a washer for both rear cameras when you clean the rear window.👍🏽

It's a given the more vertical the rear of the car, the worse it sucks in crud, but the Bolt is the worst ever. Today, in a slushy winter, the front and sides were sparkling clean and the rear window was opaque.

Anyone ever had a worse rear window than the Bolt?

Lots of worse ones. Tesla for example. They do need to modify the design tho.

This sort of thing must come as a shock for those who emigrate from California to a state with precipitation.

Those of us who choose to stay in California have no idea what you're talking about.

It's among the worst we've ever owned.

Isn't that true of just about any car? I've always noticed that with all of mine. The issue has always been, if you have a light rain or you are driving on damp roads, there's enough wind on the front and sides to push the water droplets off, yet they collect/sit on the back and make dirty water spots.

Mike
It's not water droplets that are the main concern for me. I live at the end of a 1 mile long dirt road. In dry conditions, after a few hundred yards at 30 mph or so it's coated with dust thick enough to darken the rear window. The wiper knocks the dry dust off fairly easily, but once you've used the washer, the dampness turns the next layer of dust into mud. Once you use the washer in dry conditions, you have to keep using it every few hundred yards, or just live with the fact that you can't see out your rear view window. I generally try to wait until I am out on the main, paved road to use the washer. (However, since a lot of roads in our area are dirt, it's an ongoing problem to maintain awareness of traffic behind you.)

When the road is wet or covered in snow/ice, that back window is just constantly coated.

I've got a Premier with the rear view mirror camera. Never had a need for the rear wiper or window for that matter.

Live off a dirt road so I blow off the back of the car with a blower every time I get home. This prevents from getting mud in the hatch recesses if it rains while having tons of dust on the rear of the car.
I think that's the OP's point: On no other car that I've ever owned have I needed to clean off the rear view window after every trip. Same thing with the backup camera: Almost every time I drive, if I don't remember to wipe it off before getting in the car, I can pretty much forget about using it. Even if I do remember, I often find I can't use it to parallel park at the end of even a short trip. It's something I've come to expect from living in the boondocks, but on none of the 7 cars we have owned in our time here has it been as much of a problem as the Bolt.

We love our Bolt, but it's definitely not a dirt road-friendly vehicle, and it would certainly use some tweaks to keep road salt and slush from hindering vision in the winter. (Our automatic high beam sensor and the left rear view mirror vehicle proximity sensor also have a lot of issue with the dirt/slush.)

Correct...just for the mirror. Again, the strange part is that it is the back up cam that gets dirty the most and the fastest. With the mirror cam tucked under the spoiler it seems to stay pretty good in comparison so perhaps the squirter is on the wrong lens practically speaking.

I recall that GM had to get approval for the mirror cam, perhaps from NHTSA. It may have been contingent on having the squirter. I guess the 2021 and older Premier owners are just lucky.

Tim Hortons napkins are now made from 100% recycled fibre, so they are the eco choice for cleaning the back up cam. ;)
