Did GM surveys conclude that the desire for a Bolt sized vehicle (and no bigger) was that strong a preference among buyers?
Actually, yes there are quite a number of current and potential buyers that don't want a larger car. Myself, the Equinox would probably be a better overall fit, as I found the cargo area of my EUV was just a touch small. My Taos is ideal, and I think the Equinox is about the same size. But they need to do an about face about no CarPlay or they are losing a large pool of potential buyers.

IMO, the Chevy Bolt was killed because they were going to come out with EV versions of Trax and Trailblazer, as part of their failed deal with Honda. That would fit in with their strategy of offering EV versions of their ICE models (Blazer ICE/EV, Equinox ICE/EV, Trailblazer ICE/EV, etc). Backtracking on the Bolt decision was a surprise to me at first until I read that the Bolt has a 70% rate of conquest sales, and that is a big deal. So, bring back the Bolt since it apparently has good brand equity, and kill the Honda deal (small CUVs, etc) and potentially kill the Trax EV and Trailblazer EV. But who knows for sure... it is all conjecture, but we can all speculate.

As for me personally, the Bolt is the perfect size and honestly, unless something dramatic happens, I will hopefully have this car for a long, long time. I only got rid of my 2019 Kia Soul EV, because it had a battery recall and I didn't want to deal with it, ironic, I know.

Maybe, but they expect Ultium to be some 30-40% lower cost than BEV2 on the battery side of the equation. With batteries being a significant part of the overall cost, and higher MSRP by selling only the EUV, there could be small net margins in the model. More significant, the low price will enable them to sell volumes, probably greater than the current generation Bolts which will help them achieve the economies of scale for Ultium.
Yeah I mean it wasn't entirely out of my butt. I kind of took Mary's stated "You can't profit on EVs" numbers and applied Dunning Kruegger LFP math. At Bolt prices that's break even. She's making it sound like it was apart of labor negotiations too. I figured it would be, but I'm surprised it's for a new plant, I thought they'd continue at Orion from negotiations but I guess they expect to actually sell Silverado EVs? Hard to reconcile, "we're not really gonna make too many EVs" and clearing out Orion but I'm sure those negotiations got complicated.

What I had said was I'd expect more efficient propulsion. That would conserve a 65kWh pack.

Today I read only an EUV model will be produced. Once again I don't get where it fits if the Equinox is built.

The Equinox EV may be over a foot and a half longer than the Bolt EUV. Plus, the cheapest Equinox EV is now around $35k. The EUV may start around $30k. There will be some price overlap, but that's typical. A stripper gas Equinox is less than a loaded but smaller Trailblazer.

Much of the propulsion energy is consumed pushing air. The EUV has more drag than the EV, due to body shape. Really, if I was to choose one or the other as the lone model for the next gen Bolt, I think the Bolt EV makes more sense. Let people that want larger cars buy the Equinox.

It will be the electric Trax is where it fits and the Trax dies (though now the Trax is popular so TBD). I can't wait to link my post from 2021 saying they needed to do this and not the BS they were doing. Cause I was very, very right about the entire big picture here.

They're just not built to sell small cars, GM. You walk into a dealership and try and buy a Spark (before it was cancelled) and you may not even get helped lol.

A little history for the crowd, Ford back in the mid 2000s developed a global platform through their European division. It was extremely well liked and lauded for being both leading edge and streamlining production via modularity. This birthed cars like the Fiesta, Focus and Fusion. They even had universally loved halo cars.

When they didn't sell well in the US, Ford killed it. And I mean all of it. They decided, "huh, $200 a car profit and we're not selling them vs. $5,000 I got on the Mustang GT, what if we just didn't make cars?" From that point forward Ford sold no cars. GM followed suit and was like, "man, Escalades are nice"

It's been no looking back and part of the reason why the Bolt has been so aggressively killed is its car classification (EUV is still a car according to EPA, not SUV). It's literally the only car sold by GM not classified as a truck in their system. I'm not even joking. The Trax is listed as a truck.

tl;dr: Bolt EUV for no EV is intentional. They know you want an EV, they don't care. Just like Ford didn't care about Fiesta ST fans like myself. (had a 2015!) SUVs or bust.

I think the LFP battery cells will be good for safety and longevity, but the lack of Android Auto means I'm not a buyer.

Too bad...
Nothing against the EUV...
Just that I really like the smaller size of my EV...
Then again, I'm happy with my 17 and at this stage will just keep it as long as I can...
If GM doesn't come up with something that can tempt me to a newer car, no biggie. I'm happy with my current one. ;-)

Here is a sweet Model 3 sized car you can buy right across the border. It has a 61.4 kWh battery.
I wish there were some interior shots of that car. If it's not a single screen for everything like a Tesla, then perhaps I might consider one. Especially since they list a version with a larger battery and over 300 miles of range.

Again, I have serious doubts the next EUV will have a LFP battery with the capacity of the current model.
The EUV has a three inch longer wheelbase than the EV, so there's a wee bit more room for a battery pack, but that's not much. So, you are probably correct. Perhaps GM could stretch the wheelbase a bit more?

The EUV is only six inches longer and the lightest version is only 56 lbs. heavier than the heaviest EV. It's also outselling the EV by about two to one. So, I don't understand all the hand wringing and consternation about dropping the ever so slightly smaller and lighter version. I'm just happy it's now coming back at all. The EUV is not stepping on the toes of the Equinox EV either.

I'm still waiting for the 2024 Bolt EV.
You be waiting a long, looong time...
Probably would be a long wait, but all it might take is a simple announcement that GM changed therir minds and they’ll continue Bolt production, and Bing!, there’s a 2024 Bolt.
